  • New Cross Country model with all-wheel drive and raised suspension
  • New Inscription model with extended wheelbase and luxurious appointments

Introduction

With the introductions of the 2016 S60 Cross Country and S60 Inscription models at the 2015 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, Volvo adds two niche-oriented variants to its lineup that the company's competitors do not offer.

Exterior Features

The Volvo S60 Cross Country has all-wheel drive (AWD), sits on a raised suspension, and features more rugged design cues. Buyers will choose between 18-in. or 19-in. aluminum wheels, and larger tires are standard to help prevent wheel damage in the event the owner decides to explore the capabilities associated with an extra 2.5 in. of ground clearance.

The Volvo S60 Inscription model has a longer wheelbase than a standard S60 but is otherwise similarly designed and equipped.

Interior Features

If the new S60 Cross Country arrives in similar specification to the V60 Cross Country that will also be in showrooms, it will offer standard sport leather seats, graphite aluminum cabin trim, adaptive digital instrumentation, Volvo Sensus Connect smartphone integration with Volvo On Call, navigation system, power sunroof, and City Safety autonomous braking technology.

The benefit of choosing the S60 Inscription over a standard S60 is that it offers a larger rear seat with added legroom and foot space. Typically, Volvo models wearing an Inscription name are luxuriously outfitted with upgraded leather, genuine wood trim, comfort seat designs, upgraded instrumentation, illuminated doorsill trim plates, and premium floor mats.

Optional Features

For the S60 Cross Country, upgrades include a premium audio system, active xenon headlights, and Keyless Drive technology, as well as Blind Spot Information System and Technology option packages loaded with safety-related features. A Climate package equips the car with heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, heated windshield, and heated washer jet nozzles.

Under the Hood

When the S60 Cross Country goes on sale it will have a turbocharged 5-cylinder engine generating 250 horsepower, a standard AWD system, and a hill-descent control system. A 6-speed automatic transmission feeds the power to all four of the S60 Cross Country's wheels.

Volvo has not announced what engine will be installed in the S60 Inscription model. Because it is sourced from Volvo's China manufacturing facility and is based on a Chinese model called the S60L, it is likely to have the same turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine from the automaker's Drive-E family of engines that is used in that market. In the United States, that engine is rated to make 240 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque.

Safety

While final specifications for these new S60 variants had not been finalized when the cars debuted, Volvo's City Safety technology will be standard equipment, an automatic braking system designed to prevent low-speed collisions with other vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians. Choose the optional blind-spot information system and the S60 is equipped with that feature plus a rear cross-traffic alert system, lane-change-assist system, and front and rear park-assist sensors.

A Technology package will also be available, installing full automatic braking with collision warning and pedestrian- and cyclist-detection systems, lane-departure warning, active high-beam headlights, an adaptive cruise control system with Queue Assist technology, and more.

Technology

Sensus Connect technology will be offered with both new versions of the S60, along with Volvo On Call apps and services, an in-vehicle Wi-Fi connection, navigation system, and a premium audio system.
