Cadillac is aiming for a zero-emissions future. The opening salvo toward realizing that goal is the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq, an all-electric midsize SUV providing 300 miles of range on a single charge. Production is expected to start in the summer of 2022, with a projected release date in late 2022.

To preview the new 2023 Lyriq, Cadillac created a show vehicle that is close to production specification. Reportedly, the vehicle depicted here is about 85% production ready. As such, the electric SUV’s debut was short on final details and instead showcased the SUV’s design and technology highlights.

During this new Caddy’s reveal, a question was posed as to why engineers and designers maintained familiar shapes and proportions for the Lyriq when a clean-sheet approach would’ve allowed Cadillac to create something totally new, unrestrained by existing stylistic idioms.

The simple answer? People like SUVs.

Nevertheless, the Lyriq is a pretty daring SUV with a long hood, a fast and tapered roofline, and sensuous swells along the flanks. A “black-crystal” panel is fitted where a grille would customarily go, integrating welcome and running lights along with an illuminated Cadillac emblem. As the owner approaches, the lighting illuminates in sequence, and the Lyriq show car further dazzles with massive 22-inch wheels.

Cadillac says that some of these design elements will be featured in future steeds of the family stable.

Inside, the 4-passenger Lyriq show vehicle supplies numerous alto palato design cues, as should be expected in a high-end luxury SUV. Cadillac employs high-end materials and soothing lighting elements to emotionally endear you to the Lyriq, such as another light-up Cadillac crest on the steering wheel and backlit door panels.

The cabin is dominated, however, by a massive 33-inch curved digital instrumentation and infotainment display that extends almost the entire length of the dashboard. Each rear passenger also enjoys a huge, individual infotainment module.

Power and Performance - Find the best Cadillac deals!

Designed on a new electric vehicle platform that will underpin future electric vehicles from General Motors, the Cadillac Lyriq employs GM’s new Ultium battery system. Developed in conjunction with South Korea’s LG Chem, the innovative nickel, manganese, cobalt, and aluminum modular batteries can be mixed and matched depending on the requirements of a specific vehicle.

GM and LG Chem are jointly building a factory in Lordstown, Ohio to manufacture Ultium batteries. Lordstown, you might recall, is where GM built the Chevrolet Cruze before halting production and shutting that factory down. It is now owned by Lordstown Motors, which will build an electric pickup truck in the vacated Cruze plant, a vehicle unrelated to GM.

Getting back to the Cadillac Lyriq, it packs 100 kWh of power, which is on par with other luxury electric SUVs such as the Audi e-tron and Tesla Model X. Cadillac says the Lyriq is compatible with DC Fast Chargers rated up to 150 kW.

Cadillac engineers explain that the new GM platform optimally integrates the battery pack and its substantial weight neatly into a vehicle’s foundation. This allows the Lyriq, a rear-wheel-drive vehicle with an available all-wheel-drive system, to boast a near-ideal 50:50 weight distribution. In turn, this balanced weight snugged low in the chassis produces driving characteristics that can be as athletic as any vehicle GM builds but can also be personalized to suit a driver’s preferences.

Safety - Find the best Cadillac deals!

Cadillac says that the Lyriq’s low center of gravity and its robust structure will allow it to excel in terms of crash safety. The Lyriq will also be a showcase for Cadillac’s Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving assistance technology. In fact, in addition to supplying hands-free driving on limited-access highways, the Lyric can execute its own lane changes, as well as park itself with the driver inside or outside of the vehicle.

Technology - Find the best Cadillac deals!

On the technology front, in addition to the huge digital instrumentation and touchscreen infotainment display, noteworthy features include a dual-plane head-up display. This design approach incorporates a familiar near plane display for speed and direction, and a far plane display that can show navigation directions and other information with augmented reality graphics.

A 19-speaker AKG studio audio system seeks to dazzle audiophiles, while a new road noise cancellation feature will obliterate unwanted clamor.
