Volvo does not define the new 2022 C40 Recharge. Conceptually, the C40 Recharge is an SUV coupe, an XC40 Recharge with a fastback roofline and less interior space. It has the same electric drive system, provides the same performance and driving range, and has the same interior design and technology. But Volvo seems content to let you determine what its new electric vehicle is.

Regardless of what you decide, the C40 Recharge is Volvo’s first purely electric vehicle. You cannot get one with an internal combustion engine. It’s also the first of the company’s vehicles exclusively available through its new online sales model for purchase or subscription at non-negotiable prices. And it comes with an interior that is 100% free of animal products.

If this sounds good to you, Volvo is taking deposits and reservations for the new C40 Recharge. It goes into production near the end of 2021 and arrives in the U.S. in early 2022.

Exterior Features - Find the best Volvo deals!

Compared to the XC40 Recharge with which it shares a platform and propulsion system, Volvo says the C40 Recharge is new from the windshield back. Nevertheless, the overall design themes and details are familiar ones.

Subtle front styling changes, including new Thor’s Hammer headlights with advanced pixel technology, separate the C40 Recharge from the XC40 Recharge. It also sits on exclusive wheels, which appear larger than they are due to the lower roofline, smaller greenhouse, and chunky five-spoke fan-blade design.

In the back, Volvo’s traditional C-shaped taillights extend upward to frame the rear window, now with a dash-line motif. A black-painted roof also helps to set the C40 Recharge apart as a distinct model.

Interior Features - Find the best Volvo deals!

With the C40 Recharge, Volvo eliminates leather, making the EV’s cabin 100% animal-free. Instead, the interior uses Nubuck textile upholstery to convey a luxurious look and feel.

The dashboard design and layout are the same as the XC40 Recharge, and the C40 Recharge retains the high, commanding seating position and easy vehicle entry and exit people prefer. An available interior theme uses blue, gray, and white hues expressed through accent colors, ambient backlit illumination, and trim elements inspired by topographical maps.

Though the C40 Recharge loses some passenger and cargo space to the more rakish roofline, a panoramic glass roof panel ensures the EV feels open and airy. Volvo also preserves utility by carrying over features such as the glovebox hook and trash bin from the XC40 Recharge.

Cargo volume behind the rear seats measures 14.6 cubic feet, including the space under the load floor. The C40 Recharge also has a front trunk, or frunk, underneath its hood.

Given that it rolls off the same assembly line and uses the same platform and electric drive system as the XC40 Recharge, it is not surprising that the C40 Recharge offers the same performance levels.

Expect more than 400 horsepower, acceleration to 60 mph in about 4.7 seconds, and an estimated 210 miles of driving range on a full 78-kWh battery. Volvo says that future over-the-air updates to the EV will improve the driving range, and owners can also extend range as much as possible using the C40 Recharge’s standard one-pedal driving technology

Through its Care by Volvo package, the automaker can help its customers install an 11-kW Level 2 home charging station. Using one, it takes about eight hours to recharge the C40. The EV is also compatible with DC fast chargers offering up to 150 kW of power. Connect to one of these, and the battery achieves an 80% charge in 40 minutes.

Volvo’s charging network partner is Chargepoint. Using the smartphone app, C40 Recharge owners can find charging stations and pay for charging. The vehicle’s infotainment system can also direct drivers to the nearest available Chargepoint charging station or one operated by an affiliate.

Safety Systems - Find the best Volvo deals!

Volvo did not list all of the safety features it will offer in the new C40 Recharge, but it’s safe to say the EV will include everything you’ll find on its XC40 Recharge sibling. Highlights include:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Forward collision warning
  • Pedestrian and cyclist detection (including at night)
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Lane-departure warning
  • Lane-keeping assistance
  • Blind-spot warning with active steering assistance
  • Rear cross-traffic warning
  • Surround-view camera

The automaker also structurally modifies the C40 Recharge to account for its lack of a gasoline engine, ensuring that the components located in the front of the vehicle aid in the dissipation of crash energy should a collision occur. Similarly, Volvo constructs the C40 Recharge’s battery pack and its surrounding safety cage to limit intrusion and, in cases where a breach does occur, to restrict the amount and spread of damage.

Infotainment and Technology - Find the best Volvo deals!

The Volvo C40 Recharge uses a Google Android operating system that keeps the EV up to date over time. Thanks to an unlimited lifetime data plan, over-the-air updates add new functions and features to the C40 Recharge while providing access to the latest Google Maps and Google Play Store offerings.

Furthermore, this technology equips the EV with Google Assistant technology, helping to reduce driver distraction. By speaking “Hey, Google” followed by a question or a command, C40 Recharge owners can perform numerous functions and tasks in a safe, intuitive, hands-free manner.

The C40 Recharge includes a navigation system, and Volvo offers a Harman Kardon premium sound system for the new model. Additionally, there is no start button. The C40 Recharge activates when the driver approaches with the keyfob, and once you’re settled in and buckled up, all you need to do is shift into gear and go.

Conceptually, the new 2022 Volvo C40 Recharge competes with vehicles such as the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Nissan Ariya, and the Tesla Model Y. Expect a higher base price for the Volvo, though, as well as a longer list of standard features.
