A redesigned version of Subaru's rear-wheel-drive sports car is coming in the fall of 2021. The 2022 Subaru BRZ gets a new engine with more power and torque, yet it isn't any bigger or heavier than the outgoing version. Various changes to the chassis should make this a better-handling BRZ as well. And from some angles, it almost looks like a Porsche.

The 2022 Subaru BRZ retains its predecessor's basic shape, but its new face has slightly softer lines and reminds us of the Porsche 718 Cayman. That comparison fades around back, as the BRZ's tail blends styling elements from the rest of the Subaru lineup.

Of course, there are plenty of functional design elements as well. The side vents redirect air from under the hood and fenders to reduce drag. Said air then pushes down on the prominent side sills to create downforce at high speeds.

Just like last year, you can have 17-inch wheels with 215/45R17 tires (Premium trim level) or 18-inch wheels with 215/40R18 tires (Limited trim). Additionally, there's a more rigid chassis. A 60-percent increase in lateral bending rigidity helps the 2022 BRZ turn in more quickly, says Subaru.

Inside, the outgoing BRZ's full analog gauges give way to all digital instrumentation. Subaru is quick to point out that the new setup still locates the tachometer in the center with a digital speedometer display inside it. In Track mode, the tachometer changes from a traditional "dial" to a bar graph to give the driver an even quicker read of engine rpm.

Naturally, the new instrument panel is programmable, so if you want to monitor a g-meter or water temperature while hammering down a back road or commuting to work, now you can.

In the center, there's an 8-inch touchscreen for the updated infotainment system and it's surrounded by hard buttons and dedicated volume and tuning knobs. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration is standard.

Otherwise, this is much the same interior design as in the previous Subaru BRZ. You're going to sit low in the supportive front seats because this is a real sports car. The BRZ still has two rear seats, and they still fold to maximize cargo capacity for grocery runs.

Under the Hood - Find the best Subaru deals!

Every 2022 Subaru BRZ has a normally aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 228 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 184 pound-feet of torque at 3,700 rpm. For comparison, the outgoing BRZ's 2.0-liter engine made just 205 hp and only 156 lb.-ft. at a lofty 6,400 rpm.

The new engine still might not satisfy Subaru's hard-core fans who for years have begged for a turbocharger, but for everyone else, this should feel like a major upgrade, especially since the 2022 BRZ isn't any heavier than last year's model. Subaru says it's just under 2,900 pounds.

The lower torque peak should make the car easier to drive in traffic if you select the six-speed manual transmission. If you choose the automatic, it's going to be a bit more satisfying than last year, as a new Sport mode provides quicker downshifts with throttle blips and uses a yaw sensor to prevent unwanted upshifts while you're attacking a corner. A limited-slip rear differential is included with either transmission.

Safety - Find the best Subaru deals!

The 2022 BRZ has a revised stability control system with five different settings. Subaru has reprogrammed it to allow more wheel slip before the traction control activates. And you can still turn the system off completely.

Technology - Find the best Subaru deals!

If you opt for an automatic transmission on the Limited trim level, your 2022 Subaru BRZ will come with Subaru's EyeSight advanced driver assistance system (ADAS). EyeSight consists of adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, and pre-collision throttle management to reduce engine power when EyeSight detects an obstacle ahead.
