The Toyota Land Cruiser is dead (in the U.S. market). Long live the Toyota Land Cruiser.

Purists might be unhappy about the departure of the Land Cruiser from American shores, but the move makes sense. After the Lexus LX launched in 1995, it became increasingly difficult to sell a Toyota at a Lexus price. So something had to give, and it was the Land Cruiser nameplate.

If you can get past that loss, the good news is that the all-new Land Cruiser available in other parts of the world is also going on sale here. You just need to look for it at your local Lexus dealership. The redesigned 2022 Lexus LX 600 is a refined example of the Cruiser and comes in Standard, Premium, Luxury, F Sport, and Ultra Luxury trim levels.

Don’t worry. In addition to its luxurious look and feel, the new 2022 LX 600 should continue to offer all of the off-roading capability for which its forebears were legendary, now combined with 21st-century technology and what sounds like dramatically improved on-pavement ride and handling qualities.

Exterior Features

With no more than a glance at the redesigned 2022 Lexus LX 600, you know what it is. You can’t miss the updated Lexus spindle grille, now featuring a frameless 3-D visual effect with crossbars designed to maximize engine cooling.

Overall, the new LX’s shape and proportions are familiar, but the 2022 LX 600 features plenty of surface drama. The hood, the trapezoidal and flared wheel arches, the chiseled flanks, and the angular greenhouse convey the LX’s status as a flagship luxury SUV. In addition, depending on specification, the LX offers 18-inch, 20-inch, or 22-inch aluminum wheels.

A new version of the SUV for 2022, the LX 600 F Sport, adds sportier design elements such as a black mesh grille, Jet Black chrome, larger lower air intakes, and gray polished 22-inch wheels. Ultra White is an exclusive paint color for this model.

Interior Features

Continuing inside, the Lexus LX 600 F Sport also features textured leather on the shifter and steering wheel and gets a set of unique seats that better combat lateral g-forces. With F Sport trim, you can also choose an exclusive Circuit Red interior color.

Overall, the new 2022 Lexus LX interior undergoes significant decluttering and modernization. However, though this is a complex SUV, simplicity rules with regard to the interior layout and controls. Most functions are embedded into one of the two infotainment display screens or the instrumentation panel, and new Voice Assistant technology helps drivers operate features that once required buttons and knobs. Some of those remain, but they’re comparatively few and far between.

The new-for-2022 Ultra Luxury trim installs individual VIP second-row seats separated by a storage console with a touchscreen control panel. They have uniquely curved cushions, seatbacks, and head restraints to better coddle their occupants and are designed to absorb vibration and suppress unwanted body movement even if the LX is off-road. Massage is available, and if you’re in the right rear seat, you can power the front passenger’s seat forward, deploy a footrest, and recline for maximum comfort.

To improve efficiency, drivers can operate the LX’s climate system on Eco Heat or Eco Cool modes or choose an S-Flow mode supplying airflow only to the front seats. In addition, some versions of the SUV add more air conditioning vents to ensure optimum rear passenger comfort.

Under the Hood

Lexus builds the fourth-generation 2022 LX on what it calls the GA-F platform, which is 20% more rigid and over 440 pounds lighter than the previous version of the SUV. A lower center of gravity improves handling and stability, and the new LX shares a 112-inch wheelbase with the original 1995 model.

The LX remains a body-on-frame SUV. It shares components with the redesigned Toyota Land Cruiser on sale in other parts of the world and the new 2022 Toyota Tundra pickup truck. However, Lexus spokesperson Alissa Moceri told me that “GA-F is further refined for Lexus products.”

Speaking of the Tundra, that truck’s twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission pull duty in the new Lexus LX 600 – with an appropriate layer of extra refinement, of course. In the LX, the engine makes 409 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, the latter available from low engine revs up to 3,600 rpm. In addition, the transmission features a low first gear for a robust feel from behind the wheel and superior off-road performance, while a high top gear keeps engine revs low on the highway to reduce noise and improve fuel economy.

Driving modes include Eco, Comfort, Normal, Sport S, Sport+, and Custom. Of course, it goes without saying that the standard 4-wheel-drive system includes low-range gearing, but Downhill Assist Control, Multi-Terrain Select, and Crawl Control also fortify this Lexus’s defenses against challenging terrain.

Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) offers drivers a choice between Auto, Dirt, Sand, Mud, and Deep Snow driving modes. It uses brake hydraulics, powertrain calibration, and the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) with Active Height Control to optimize performance for a selected setting. In addition, Lexus says the MTS now operates in both high- and low-range 4WD and that the new braking system automatically recalibrates itself for off-road performance requirements.

Crawl Control is an off-road cruise control system. Drivers choose between Lo, MidL, Mid, MidH, and High speed settings. Following activation, Crawl Control maintains a steady low rate of speed while the driver focuses on safely navigating the SUV.

To assist in this endeavor, the available Multi-Terrain Monitor (MTM) technology includes front, side, and rear cameras to help with off-roading (and parking, for that matter). One view provides a “see-through” function showing the wheels and what’s on the ground beneath them. The side view cameras aim down at the front wheels to further aid visibility, and there is a top-down surround-view vantage point.

Lexus did not divulge the LX 600’s approach, breakover, or departure angles. However, the company does claim the new LX remains stable on a 44-degree slope, can climb a 45-degree grade, and can ford 27.5 inches of water.

Lexus promises “exceptional” performance both on and off the pavement. To make the LX more agreeable to drive the 95% of the time you’re not adventuring off the grid, it possesses what the automaker calls Lexus Driving Signature. What’s that? Think of it as smooth, predictable, and competent driving dynamics, and you’ll get the gist.

For the new LX, the foundational element of the Lexus Driving Signature is the GA-F platform and its lower center of gravity and lighter weight. New electronic braking and steering systems are also a part of the recipe, along with a new high-mounted double-wishbone front suspension design and improved 4-link solid axle rear suspension. 

Both the Adaptive Variable Suspension and Active Height Control systems play roles, too. For example, the AVS softens the suspension for in-town driving but stiffens up when rounding curves to control body roll. Similarly, Active Height Control automatically lowers the SUV on the highway to improve fuel economy.

Lexus feels confident enough about the new LX’s on-pavement handling to offer a new F Sport version of the SUV. It features a performance-tuned suspension with a rear stabilizer bar, revised steering and AVS settings, and an exclusive Torsen limited-slip differential to maximize rear-wheel traction. Naturally, 22-inch wheels are standard on the F Sport.

Safety Systems

Thanks to a standard Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 collection of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS), the new LX 600 takes a giant leap forward in terms of its technological sophistication.

Infotainment and Technology

The new 2022 LX 600 has Lexus Interface, the company’s latest infotainment technology. In this SUV, it uses two high-definition touchscreen displays. The top screen measures 12.3 inches and offers access to the audio, navigation, and most other features. The bottom screen measures seven inches and serves as the access panel for the climate control system.

Why does Lexus use two screens in the new LX? The company claims the design allows a driver to reference the Multi-Terrain Monitor cameras and the Multi-Terrain Select data simultaneously. Makes sense.

Lexus Interface is a sophisticated infotainment system. Its Voice Assistant technology is terrific in the redesigned 2022 NX model, and that should prove true in the LX, too. In addition, numerous cloud-based features add a layer of sophistication to the technology, which benefits over time from over-the-air software updates.

Lexus hasn’t forgotten to provide a quality audio experience in the new LX. A 25-speaker Mark Levinson surround sound system is available.

2022 Lexus LX 600 Competitors

As a full-size flagship SUV, the 2022 Lexus GX 600 faces few competitors, and only the Land Rover Range Rover can challenge it off-road. Otherwise, Lexus hopes to attract customers who might instead choose a BMW X7, Cadillac Escalade, Jeep Grand Wagoneer, Lincoln Navigator, or Mercedes-Benz GLS.

Whether or not that happens remains to be seen. But the new LX 600 has a much better shot at doing so than the SUV it replaces.
