2022 Ford Expedition Preview

FAST FACTS
  • Refreshed styling
  • New interior and infotainment systems
  • More powerful engine available in some models
  • Additional driving assistance technologies
  • New Timberline off-road trim level

Long ago, Ford figured out that using an independent rear suspension in its full-size SUV would create more cargo space and third-row passenger room than its competitors in the space. But, now that General Motors is employing the same solution in its redesigned family of large sport-utes, and Jeep is posing a new threat with its new Wagoneer model, the refreshed 2022 Ford Expedition is finding new ways to distinguish itself.

As was true before, the 2022 Expedition comes in standard-length and extended-length (Expedition Max) body styles and in XL, STX, XLT, Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum trim levels. A new off-road-ready version of the SUV joins the lineup for 2022, and the returning Stealth Edition gains more power and performance.

Ford also endows the 2022 Expedition with a big new infotainment display and a sophisticated new hands-free driving assistance system. All Expeditions have a twin-turbocharged V6 engine, but for 2022 a new high-output version of the engine is available. And towing capacity remains much higher than rivals from Chevrolet and GMC (but cannot match the Wagoneer).

Ford ensures that you can spot the 2022 Expedition by giving it new front styling with standard LED headlights, C-shaped running lights, bold grille designs, and a restyled front bumper. A new active airdam option deploys at speeds over 40 mph to improve aerodynamics and efficiency, and retracts so that you don’t bang it up on parking curbs or when off-roading.

In the back, the Expedition has new taillights with a similar C-shaped motif, with a new trim piece running the width of the tailgate between them. Large, appealing block lettering spells out EXPEDITION across the back of the SUV. Ford also offers new aluminum wheel designs.

The Stealth Edition returns for 2022. You can add this package to the Expedition or Expedition Max with Limited trim, and it features blacked-out exterior lighting, trim accents, and badges. The Stealth Edition rides on black 22-inch wheels fronting red brake calipers.

New for 2022, the Expedition Timberline has an off-road theme. An exclusive body-color grille, orange exterior accents and recovery hooks, a big lower skid plate, and all-terrain tires mounted to black 18-inch wheels identify this model.

2022 Ford Expedition Platinum Interior Dashboard Sync 4A

Until now, the Ford Expedition has used a dashboard and controls yanked right out of the previous-generation F-150 pickup truck. This approach made the SUV look and feel a little more basic and industrial than its price tag would sometimes suggest. Now, however, the Expedition gets a new interior design reminiscent of the smaller Explorer’s.

Highlights include nicer materials, a cleaner appearance, and far less clutter than before. In part, this is possible thanks to the SUV’s new available digital instrumentation display and its Sync 4 and Sync 4A infotainment systems.

As was true before, the 2022 Expedition seats up to eight people, and passengers in the second- and third-row seats should enjoy the same expansive room and excellent leg support provided by the previous Expedition. Cargo room remains generous, especially with the third-row seats folded down.

Under the Hood - Find the best Ford deals!

Every 2022 Ford Expedition has a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine, a 10-speed automatic transmission, and rear-wheel or 4-wheel drive. However, the V6 comes in three different states of tune.

With XL, STX, and XLT trim, the engine produces 380 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. The Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum supply an even 400 horses and 480 pound-feet of torque. New for 2022, a high-output version of the V6 makes 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque, and is exclusively available in the Timberline and Stealth Edition versions of the SUV.

In addition to the more robust engine, the Stealth Edition has a sport-tuned suspension to go along with its 22-inch wheels and tires. The Expedition Timberline, on the other hand, is all about heading off the road and into the wild.

Ford equips the Timberline with a 2-speed transfer case, a raised suspension with 10.6 inches of ground clearance, improved approach and departure angles, underbody skid plates from the F-150 Raptor, and 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler all-terrain tires. It also has Trail Turn Assist technology, which helps to tighten the SUV’s turning radius to make the full-size SUV more manueverable on trails.

Depending on the configuration, the 2022 Expedition tows up to 9,300 pounds.

Safety Systems - Find the best Ford deals!

For 2022, Ford expands the Expedition’s collection of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS). In addition to Co-Pilot360, the SUV now offers the following features:

  • Intersection Assist – Prevents an unsafe left turn across oncoming traffic
  • Evasive Steering Assistance – Helps a driver to maintain control of the Expedition when taking sudden evasive action to avoid an obstacle
  • Road Edge Detection – Lane-keeping assistance feature that can detect the edge of a road that doesn’t have lane markings
  • Reverse Brake Assist – Automatically brakes if the Expedition is about to reverse into an obstacle

Ford’s hands-free BlueCruise technology is also available on the 2022 Expedition, but only with Platinum trim. This Level 2+ technology combines adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, lane-centering assistance, a road sign recognition system, and a driver monitoring camera that ensures you’re paying attention at all times. BlueCruise operates only on limited-access highways and in approved Hands-Free Blue Zones in the U.S. and Canada.

Infotainment and Technology - Find the best Ford deals!

In addition to an available new 12.4-inch digital instrumentation display, Ford offers two different versions of its Sync 4 infotainment technology in the 2022 Expedition.

Standard equipment includes Sync 4 with a 12-inch touchscreen. This system is similar to what you’d find in a modern Ford F-150 pickup truck. The upgrade system is Sync 4A with a 15.5-inch touchscreen display mounted portrait-style in the middle of the dashboard. It is similar to what Ford uses in the Mustang Mach-E, and uses something the company calls “adaptive dash card technology” instead of traditional menus to organize content and manage the user experience.

In order to keep the Expedition’s tech up-to-date, owners will receive regular Ford Power-Ups software improvements through over-the-air updates.

Audiophiles will appreciate the available 22-speaker Bang & Olufsen Unleashed premium audio system with 360-degree surround-sound. It is available on the King Ranch, Platinum, and Timberline trims, and comes with the Stealth Edition Package on Limited trim.

Ford also offers a new Pro Trailer Backup Assist 2.0 technology, helping owners who tow trailers to reverse them with confidence. This new version of the system features a fully automated user experience, making it easier to use than before.

2022 Ford Expedition Competitors - Find the best Ford deals!

Collectively, the changes to the 2022 Ford Expedition should ensure the SUV remains competitive with the recently redesigned Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL. It also appears ready to combat the all-new 2022 Jeep Wagoneer. Additionally competitors include the Nissan Armada and Toyota Sequoia.
