At Dodge, there is no such thing as too much horsepower. That philosophy is on blatant display with the new 2021 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat, a version of the midsize 3-row SUV equipped with a supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V-8 making 710 horsepower.

Hellacious performance is just one of the changes to the 2021 Dodge Durango. The family-hauler also gets updated styling, a revised interior, a new infotainment system, and more. For 2021, the Durango is available in SXT, GT, R/T, Citadel, SRT 392, and SRT Hellcat variants.

Dodge breathes new life into the aging Durango with revised front styling. Slimmer full LED headlights with LED signature lighting are standard, flanking a restyled grille. The front bumper, rear spoiler, and aluminum wheel designs are also new.

The high-performance 2021 Durango SRT Hellcat adds a chin splitter, an oil cooler duct, and an air guide and snorkel to feed the cold-air induction system. At the rear of the SUV, an aerodynamically-tuned spoiler produces a 400% improvement in rear downforce at maximum speed.

All 2021 Dodge Durangos have a new dashboard to accommodate the company’s next-generation Uconnect 5 infotainment system and its 10.1-inch touchscreen display. Dodge says the design is “Challenger-inspired,” with the screen angled 7 degrees toward the driver.

Additional changes include a new electronic shifter with the look and feel of a traditional shifter, a new center console with more storage, and revised controls including buttons for seat heating and cooling now separated from the infotainment screen. Upgraded materials are also a part of the update, and most versions of the SUV offer an available leatherette-wrapped instrument panel for a more upscale, quality look.

The new Durango SRT Hellcat gets several exclusive interior features, such as red-accented gauges, a red-backlit SRT logo on the steering wheel, and heated and ventilated sport seats wrapped in premium Nappa leather and simulated suede.

For the most part, the 2021 Durango offers similar standard and optional equipment to the 2020 model. 

For a custom appearance, Dodge offers several packages for the Durango. There is an SXT Platinum Package that includes 20-inch aluminum wheels, a Blacktop Package (SXT, GT, R/T) that blacks out much of the exterior trim, a similar SRT Black Package (SRT 392 and SRT Hellcat), and an SRT Platinum Package.

Additionally, super-premium Black/Demonic Red Laguna leather is available for the SRT Hellcat, and most 2021 Durangos can be optioned with dual racing stripes running up the hood, over the roof, and down the tailgate.

With the Durango SRT Hellcat, Dodge says it has created “the most powerful SUV ever.”

The claim is rooted in the use of a supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V-8 engine from the Dodge Challenger and Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat models. In the Durango, it generates 710 horsepower and 645 lb.-ft. of torque. An 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters puts the power to each of the SUV’s wheels, and seven different drive modes (Auto, Sport, Track, Snow, Tow, Eco, Valet) adjust powertrain response accordingly. 

You’re probably wondering how this translates into Durango SRT Hellcat performance. According to Dodge, 60 mph arrives in 3.5 seconds. The SUV screams down the dragstrip to an 11.5-second quarter-mile time. Top speed is 180 mph. And it still tows 8,700 pounds and hauls up to seven people.

Obviously, mechanical fortification is necessary. To that end, drivers can select specific steering tuning, and Dodge has massaged the suspension so that it provides reduced understeer, less body roll, improved responsiveness, and greater grip. Brembo calipers (6-piston front and 4-piston rear) clamp 2-piece vented 15.75-inch front and vented 13.8-inch rear discs to haul the SRT Hellcat down from speed.

If you want a Durango SRT Hellcat, don’t waste time. Dodge says it will build the high-performance SUV for just one model year. It arrives in showrooms in early 2021.

The previous Durango SRT is now called the SRT 392, and it continues with a 475-hp 6.4-liter Hemi V-8. Upgrades for 2021 include some of the Hellcat’s suspension goodies, improving handling and lap times over the previous Durango SRT. Both of the SRT-tuned SUVs include a new flat-bottom performance steering wheel with paddle shifters, Launch Control, and Launch Assist. A set of 295/45 Pirelli P-Zero summer performance tires is an option.

A new Tow N Go Package is available for the Durango R/T. It combines the R/T’s 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 with an electronic limited-slip differential, additional driving modes, Brembo brake calipers and slotted front discs, an SRT-tuned performance exhaust system, and an SRT active suspension with SRT design elements. Exclusive front and rear fender flares visually identify this version of the Durango, which tows 8,700 lbs. and goes 145 mph.

In addition to this trio of V-8 engines, a 3.6-liter V-6 good for 295 hp is standard with SXT, GT, and Citadel trim levels.

Dodge did not announce much in the way of safety-related details for the 2021 Durango. 

Depending on the trim level, the SUV is available with adaptive cruise control with full-stop capability, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, lane departure warning, and lane keeping assistance systems.

Dodge confirms that all of these technologies are standard with Citadel trim.

Aside from the massive horsepower infusion wrought by the new SRT Hellcat, the biggest news for the 2021 Durango is a new Uconnect 5 infotainment system with a 10.1-inch touchscreen display.

Standard equipment for all but the SXT and GT trim levels, which continue with Uconnect 8.4, the new Uconnect 5 system offers five times the processing speed of the old system and offers over-the-air firmware updates so the technology is always current. The new infotainment system is an option for the Durango GT.

Like Uconnect 8.4, Uconnect 5 includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Here, however, those smartphone integration technologies are wireless. 

Uconnect 5 also supports home screen personalization, provides slots for up to six different driver profiles including one for valets, expands Amazon Alexa capabilities, offers SiriusXM 360 L satellite radio, and has a connected navigation system with predictive search and natural voice recognition. As was true of Uconnect 8.4, a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot is available.

Additionally, the 2021 Durango offers wireless device charging and a Blu-ray rear-seat entertainment system with dual 9-inch viewing screens.
