Introduction

Toyota says there are more than 30 different configurations of the Tacoma from which to choose, helping to explain why this midsize pickup truck is so popular. And now, with the changes to the 2020 Toyota Tacoma, the automaker is giving truck buyers even more reason to consider owning one.

Exterior Features

The 2020 Tacoma continues in SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Limited trim levels.

Most versions get minor styling and wheel revisions to set the refreshed midsize pickup apart from those that came before it, and all but the base SR and popular SR5 add Smart Key entry functionality for the front passenger’s door this year.

Limited trim gets new LED headlights and an LED bed lamp, which are optional for the TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road. Additionally, the TRD Pro trim adds a special sequential LED headlight design that is not shared with other Tacomas.

Army Green is a new paint color for 2020, but it’s reserved for the Tacoma TRD Pro.

Interior Features

Toyota makes a seemingly small yet significant change to the 2020 Tacoma’s interior. All but the base SR trim are now equipped with a 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat for 2020.

This represents a big improvement over the previous 4-way manually adjustable seat, and will no doubt make the 2020 Tacoma far more comfortable to drive.

Under the Hood

Toyota makes no changes to the Tacoma’s powertrains. Depending on the configuration, the truck has either a 159-horsepower, 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine or a 3.5-liter V6 delivering 278 hp. A 6-speed automatic transmission is standard, but on some versions of the truck Toyota offers a 6-speed manual transmission with the V6.

As was true before, 4-wheel drive is an option. For added off-roading capability, choose the TRD Off-Road or TRD Pro versions of the truck.

Safety

Toyota makes no safety-related changes to the 2020 Tacoma. It continues to offer standard Toyota Safety Sense, a suite of features that on this truck includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, a lane departure warning system, automatic high-beam headlights, and a drowsy driver detection system.

Technology

Perhaps the biggest news related to the 2020 Tacoma is the addition of both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to the truck’s upgraded infotainment system. It took Toyota a long time to add smartphone integration, bringing Apple CarPlay into several of its vehicles for 2019. Now, it appears the company will be supporting Android devices, too.

In addition to these popular platforms, the Tacoma will offer a larger 8-inch touchscreen display for the first time. It is included in all but the standard SR trim level, which has a 7-inch display upgrade from the previous 6.1-inch screen.

Amazon Alexa compatibility is also new for 2020, standard on all trim levels. A Panoramic View Monitor also debuts, included with Limited and TRD Pro trim and available for all but the SR and SR5.

Standard on the Tacoma TRD Pro, a new Multi Terrain Monitor system provides the driver with a better view of what’s going on underneath the truck at any given time. This is especially useful while off-roading, and Toyota offers this technology as an option for the Tacoma TRD Off-Road.
