2020 Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro Preview

Full-size SUVs remain popular with consumers, and though the Toyota Sequoia is now more than a decade old, its combination of size, power, and durability has earned it a loyal customer base. Now, Toyota gives this big SUV’s fans a new reason to love this SUV: the 2020 Sequoia TRD Pro.
You’ll be able to tell the new Sequoia TRD Pro apart from other trim levels by its special grille that says “TOYOTA” in capital letters. It is flanked by LED headlights and fog lights, and the TRD Pro rides on unique BBS forged aluminum 18-inch wheels equipped with unexpectedly modest P275/65 tires.
Black cast aluminum running boards match the wheels, making it easier to get into and out of the Sequoia but also limiting the SUV’s breakover angle to some degree. A robust roof rack is standard just in case the generous cargo space simply isn’t enough.
Toyota offers the Sequoia TRD Pro in an exclusive Army Green color, plus Super White, Midnight Black, and Magnetic Gray.
Inside, the TRD Pro features standard 7-passenger seating with second-row captain’s chairs. They’re wrapped in black leather with red stitching and “TRD Pro” embroidered into the front head restraints. All-weather floor mats make clean up easier. Standard equipment includes keyless entry with push-button engine starting, an 8-way power driver’s seat, a power sunroof, and triple-zone automatic climate control.
The Sequoia offers 18.9 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the third-row seat. Fold it down to access 66.6 cu.-ft. of volume, and fold the captain’s chairs to create the maximum of 120.1 cu.-ft. The Sequoia is equipped with a separate power rear window with automatic operation.
Under the Hood
Like all 2020 Sequoias, the TRD Pro is equipped with a 5.7-liter V8 engine producing 381 horsepower and 401 lb.-ft. of torque. Toyota points out that 90% of the engine’s peak torque arrives at 2,200 rpm, providing plenty of low-end grunt for towing up to 7,100 pounds of trailer.
A 6-speed automatic transmission powers the rear wheels unless you’ve engaged the TRD Pro’s standard Multi-Mode 4-wheel drive system. It includes a locking limited-slip center differential and 2-speed transfer case with shift-on-the fly access to low-range via a rotary knob. This 4WD system is an option on other Sequoias.
What makes it possible to call this Sequoia a TRD Pro is the special TRD-tuned suspension. It uses Fox internal bypass shock absorbers with increased front rebound travel, and these components exhibit reduced fade during extended bouts of off-road driving.
Additionally, the TRD Pro is equipped with a front undercarriage skid plate, and Toyota will offer a cat-back exhaust system with a more aggressive note as an option.
As is true of the 2019 Sequoia, the new Sequoia TRD Pro is equipped with a standard Toyota Safety Sense suite of driver assistance and collision avoidance technologies. It includes adaptive cruise control with full stop capability, a forward collision warning system, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, a drowsy driver monitoring system, and automatic high beam headlights.
Additionally, the Sequoia TRD Pro is equipped with a blind spot monitoring system and rear cross-traffic alert.
For 2020, every Sequoia benefits from a new infotainment system that adds Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility to the SUV. This news is especially important because it signals that Toyota will officially roll out Android Auto during the 2020 model year.
While it retains a small 7-inch display, forced by the design of the Sequoia’s dashboard, the screen offers high-resolution graphics. It also equips the SUV with Bluetooth, HD Radio, satellite radio, navigation, and a JBL premium sound system.
