A long time in coming, the 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia is set to arrive in the United States in the summer of 2016. Alfa already introduced the performance version, the Quadrifoglio, months ago. Here, we are discussing the mainstream Giulia and Giulia Super model lines.
says the new 2017 Giulia has one of the longest wheelbases combined with some of the most compact dimensions in the midsize luxury sport sedan segment.
Leading with its signature trefoil grille, the Giulia aims to deliver Italian simplicity, according to the carmaker. To that end, clean, streaming lines characterize the car’s design, which features a long hood, short overhangs, and a passenger cabin mounted toward the rear of the platform, emphasizing the drive wheels.
Halogen headlights are standard, with LED illumination for the running lights and taillights.
Alfa calls the Giulia’s interior clean and driver-focused, equipped with premium materials in order to create a sensation similar to tailor-made clothing. Most controls are accessible from the steering wheel, helping to pare the remainder of the driving environment down to the essentials. In European specification, cloth seating is standard.
In Europe, Giulia Super buyers will receive leather seating with fabric inserts, upgraded interior trim, and larger 17-in. wheels. A Luxury package adds full leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, heated front seats, real wood trim, chrome exterior detailing, and HID adaptive headlights. Separately, a Sport package equips the car with HID adaptive headlights, unique steering wheel, and aluminum interior trim.
Under the Hood
In order to achieve what Alfa Romeo characterizes as “perfect weight distribution,” the Giulia employs a front-midship powertrain arrangement, similar to the Infiniti Q50. In the United States, a turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine will make 276 horsepower, fed to the rear wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is planned as an option.
The base Giulia model gets a new Alfa Link suspension system. It employs an aluminum double-wishbone design up front, equipped with an exclusive semi-virtual steering axis that Alfa promises will supply “the most direct steering in the market segment.” At the rear, an aluminum 4.5-link rear suspension includes a patented solution for toe adjustment.
Additionally, the Giulia has an Integrated Brake System designed to reduce braking distances and provide a responsive pedal free of vibration from ABS engagement.
Standard equipment will include a forward-collision warning system with pedestrian-detection capability, automatic emergency braking system, and a lane-departure warning system. Options include adaptive HID headlights and a blind-spot warning system.
Included as standard equipment, the Giulia features a 6.5-in. touch-screen infotainment system and a 3.5-in. driver-information display within the instrumentation. A 7-in. driver-information display is available, as is an 8.8-in. infotainment system with navigation, voice recognition, and a rotary operation pad.
Adaptive cruise control is optional for the new Giulia, and with this model Harman Kardon introduces a new Sound Theatre surround-sound audio system with 14 speakers and 900 watts of power.
