Need up to 10.3 in. of ground clearance? Want a truck with a unique, off-road-ready appearance? Check out the new 2015 Ram 1500 Rebel, which debuted at the 2015 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. Offering improved capability when it comes to traversing the rough stuff, the new Ram Rebel is available only in a crew cab body style with a short cargo bed.
To ensure that nobody mistakes the new Rebel truck for a standard-issue Ram pickup, this model gets a distinctly different appearance. Up front, revised styling includes a new blacked-out grille, off-road bumper design with a black powder-coated finish, dark-background headlights, LED fog lights, skid plates, and tow hooks.
An aluminum twin-scoop hood as well as wheel arch moldings from the Ram Power Wagon contribute to the Ram Rebel's unique look, as do a new tailgate with "RAM" lettering, dual chrome-tipped exhaust outlets, darkened taillights, and a black powder-coated rear bumper.
Available in black, white, and shades of gray, the Ram Rebel features flat black trim all around and black lower body paint. Buyers can specify a monotone paint treatment, too. The truck rides on special 17-in. aluminum wheels wrapped in 33-in. all terrain tires.
Decked out with cloth seats with vinyl bolsters, the Ram Rebel gets special Iron Gray Metallic interior trim, Radar Red accents and seat detailing, and a mix of red and gray exposed stitching on various surfaces. The seats even feature inserts that have a tire tread pattern identical to the rubber fitted to the truck at the factory, and both the front seats and the steering wheel are heated. A new center console bin accommodates smartphones and tablet computers, and this version of the Ram gets a black headliner and a "Rebel" nameplate on the dashboard.
Options announced by Ram at the Rebel's unveiling include a reversing camera, tri-fold pickup bed tonneau cover, and a RamBox cargo bed with locking side-mounted storage. Given the number of options offered for other versions of the Ram, the company is likely to announce additional upgrades closer to the truck's arrival in showrooms.
The Ram Rebel's standard engine is a 305-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 engine, and buyers can opt for a 395-horsepower, 5.7-liter "Hemi" V-8 with fuel-saving cylinder-deactivation technology. Both are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, and both feature 4-wheel drive. A 2-wheel-drive version is also available, but only with the V-8 engine.
Equipped with Bilstein shocks and adjustable Active-Level 4-corner air-spring suspension, the Ram Rebel sits one inch higher than stock for improved approach, breakover, and departure angles, and boasts 10.3 in. of ground clearance. A set of 33-in. all-terrain tires and a softer rear stabilizer bar are also included, and a rear locking differential is available.
Aside from a reversing camera, the Ram Rebel's safety feature list is a short one. It will be available with a Uconnect infotainment system, though, complete with an 8.4-in. color touch-screen display, USB connectivity, premium sound system, and a navigation system. Ram's Uconnect Access technology provides smartphone integration and access to a number of features and services. Buyers can also upgrade to in-cab Wi-Fi Internet connectivity.
