IntroductionPay attention to U.S. sales figures and you'll discover that cars with six-figure price tags sell in impressive numbers in post-Great Recession America. The most popular model in the Mercedes-Benz showroom, however, is the C-Class. While the German automaker continues to reach further down in terms of price point in order to capture younger buyers sooner, at the same time that it builds the new CLA-Class and GLA-Class models it is preparing to launch a sophisticated new 2015 S-Class Coupe way up in six-digit pricing territory.
The new 2015 Mercedes-Benz S550 4Matic Coupe will debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show and will arrive in the United States in the fall of 2014.
Exterior FeaturesAccording to Mercedes, the new 2015 S-Class Coupe is designed to express "sensual purity" in order to "create a bridge between modernity and the avant-garde, between tradition and progressivism." In summing up the new S-Class Coupe, Mercedes-Benz says the car is "one of the most gorgeous coupes of all time" and "a masterpiece of automotive refinement."
Highlights of the new S550 4Matic's exterior design include a 3-D diamond-pattern grille with a center-mounted Mercedes-Benz star emblem, full LED lighting, power domes stamped into the hood, and a standard panoramic glass roof with Magic Sky Control. The new S-Class Coupe exhibits the hallmark Mercedes "dropping line" when viewed in profile, and the car combines a low greenhouse, high beltline, and frameless doors for a sleek, tapered appearance.
Around back, designers have hidden the reversing and surround-view cameras behind the rear Mercedes star emblem. A limited-production S550 4Matic Edition 1 Coupe model will feature 47 Swarovski crystals for the running lights and turn signal indicators.
Interior FeaturesMercedes promises "quality workmanship" and "exceptional touch and feel" materials for the new 2015 S550 4Matic Coupe.
The design features four individual seats, a wrap-around upper dashboard section, floating lower section, and wide-screen Thin Film Transistor (TFT) displays arrayed in front of the steering wheel and above four round climate system vents. Standard equipment includes ambient lighting, touchpad finger-gesture controls with character-recognition technology, and a Burmeister surround-sound audio system.
In addition to more common color choices, Mercedes plans to offer Bengal Red, Porcelain, and Saddle Brown interior colors.
Optional FeaturesPremium leather upholstery in a diamond-stitched pattern will be an option for the S550 4Matic Coupe, along with a Burmeister 3-D High-End Surround Sound system, an LED head-up display, Warmth Comfort package with a heated center armrest, and an Air Balance package with cabin air fragrance and air ionization.
Under the HoodA twin-turbocharged, 4.7-liter V-8 engine is standard for the new S-Class Coupe, making 449 horsepower and 516 lb.-ft. of torque. A 4Matic all-wheel-drive system is standard, and Mercedes promises an "emotional" exhaust note thanks to a dual exhaust system with silencer flaps that operate based on engine speed and the selected drive program.
SafetyThe full range of Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive technologies will be available for the 2015 S-Class Coupe, including a Collision Prevention Assist Plus system that can now automatically brake at speeds up to 65 mph, and is designed to prevent rear-end collisions at speeds up to 25 mph. Additional items in the Intelligent Drive suite of features include Pre-Safe Brake with Pedestrian Detection, Distronic Plus active cruise control with Steering Assist, Brake Assist System Plus with Cross Traffic Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Adaptive High-Beam Assist, Night View Assist Plus, and Pre-Safe Plus with rear-collision recognition.
TechnologySwarovski crystal headlights aside, the new S-Class Coupe will be the first production car to employ Active Curve Tilting technology. A part of the Active Body Control suspension, this new feature allows the S-Class Coupe to lean into a curve like a motorcyclist or a skier would, up to 2.5 degrees, reducing the effects of lateral acceleration on the car's occupants. When the driver elects to engage the system it is active at speeds between 19 mph and 112 mph.
