IntroductionThe 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe and E-Class Cabriolet are 4-seat luxury performance models offered in E350 and E550 series. Both models are updated for the 2014 model year, and will arrive in Mercedes-Benz showrooms in the summer of 2013.
Exterior FeaturesFor 2014, the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe and E-Class Cabriolet receive new front styling with single-lens headlights featuring LED running lights. Full LED headlights are an option. The front bumper is equipped with larger air intakes, and a redesigned rear bumper with new chrome trim resides beneath restyled taillights.
Both models retain their signature pontoon-style rear fender flares, and the
E-Class Coupe continues to offer a roof design without pillars. The E-Class Cabriolet model has an acoustic convertible top designed to eliminate wind noise at highway speeds, and the standard AirCap system is designed to reduce cabin drafts and turbulence with the top lowered. For 2014, AirCap is modified to automatically deploy at speeds above 25 mph and to retract at speeds under 10 mph.
Interior FeaturesThe 2014 E-Class Coupe and E-Class Cabriolet receive upgraded interior appointments, including a new analog clock for the dashboard. The center console is redesigned, adding storage space and larger cupholders while removing the traditional shifter. Gears are selected using a new Direct Select shift lever or the paddle shifters mounted to the new 3-spoke multi-function steering wheel.
Optional FeaturesIn addition to new full-LED headlights, the 2014 E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet can be outfitted with revised interior color combinations, including a new blue-and-beige treatment. Additionally, the new E-Class models offer a sport suspension and an Advanced Agility package with driver-selected Comfort and Sport vehicle settings. The E350 Coupe can be optioned with 4Matic all-wheel drive.
In addition to these features, the new E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet are offered with a suite of Intelligent Drive safety features, which are discussed in greater detail below.
Under the HoodThe 2014 Mercedes-Benz E350 Coupe and E350 Cabriolet are equipped with a direct-injection, 3.5-liter V-6 engine generating 302 horsepower and 273 lb.-ft. of torque. A 7-speed automatic transmission directs power to the vehicle's rear wheels. A 4Matic all-wheel-drive system is optional with this engine, but only for the E350 Coupe.
The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E550 Coupe and E550 Cabriolet have a twin-turbocharged, direct-injection, 4.6-liter V-8 engine developing 402 horsepower and 443 lb.-ft. of torque. Like the E350 models, the E550 models have a 7-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive.
For 2014, both engines benefit from standard ECO Start/Stop technology that shuts off the engine when idling in traffic or at an intersection in order to conserve fuel.
SafetySafety-related technology upgrades represent a significant change for the 2014 E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet models. Standard features include a new Collision Prevention Assist system with adaptive braking, an enhanced Attention Assist system, and a new multi-purpose stereo camera mounted near the rearview mirror.
The camera captures a detailed 3-dimensional view of everything in front of the E-Class at a range of 165 feet, and can monitor forward conditions up to 1,640 feet ahead, according to Mercedes. When combined with the optional Driver Assistance package and its front radar sensors, algorithms continually perform what the automaker calls "spatial classification of moving objects" in an effort to detect potential threats to the E-Class and its occupants.
Safety-related options for the new E-Class models include a 360-degree camera system, Active Parking Assist system that actively steers and brakes the vehicle while the driver operates the foot pedals, and a Pre-Safe Plus system that can identify when a rear impact is about to occur, prepare the cabin and safety systems for the impact, and then apply the brakes after the crash to ensure that the E-Class doesn't collide with surrounding vehicles, pedestrians or objects.
Additionally, the 2014 E-Class offers optional Distronic Plus active cruise control with Steering Assist, Brake Assist System Plus (BAS Plus) with Intersection Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, and Pre-Safe Brake with Pedestrian Detection. This latter feature can autonomously brake the E-Class to avoid impacting other vehicles, pedestrians and objects at speeds up to 30 mph.
