With the rear seats raised, the CX-5 holds 34.1 cu. ft. of cargo. Folding them creates up to 65.4 cu.-ft. of volume. Sport models have a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, while the Touring and Grand Touring models offer a 40/20/20 split-folding rear seat.
Standard equipment for the CX-5 Sport includes air conditioning, cloth seats, a height-adjustable driver seat, 3-spoke tilt/telescopic steering wheel, cruise control, power windows, a push-button ignition system, and a stereo with a CD player, a USB port and an auxiliary audio input jack.

Additionally, this model is equipped with fog lights, dark tinted rear privacy glass, nicer cloth seats, a 6-way power driver seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and two additional stereo speakers.

Grand Touring models are equipped with 19-inch aluminum wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather seats, heated front seats, an 8-way power driver seat, a Bose premium sound system, satellite radio, heated outside mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, and a power sunroof. Under the HoodThe 2014 Mazda CX-5 is offered with a choice between two SkyActiv 4-cylinder engines. The CX-5 Sport is equipped with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder rated to make 155 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 150 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm. For 2014, the CX-5 Touring and the CX-5 Grand Touring models are equipped with a more powerful 2.5-liter 4-cylinder generating 184 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 185 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,250 rpm.
The CX-5 Sport model comes standard with a 6-speed manual gearbox, with a 6-speed automatic transmission optional. The CX-5 Touring and Grand Touring models include the 6-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment. All CX-5 models have front-wheel drive. An Active Torque Split all-wheel-drive system is optional.
According to the EPA, the CX-5 Sport is rated to get 29 mpg in combined driving, regardless of transmission choice. Choose AWD, and that figure drops to 28 mpg. The CX-5 Touring and Grand Touring models with the new 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine are rated to get 27 mpg in combined driving with front-wheel-drive, and 26 mpg with AWD.
SafetyBuyers who choose the 2014 Mazda CX-5 Touring or Grand Touring models get a standard reversing camera system and a standard Blind Spot Monitoring System. An Adaptive Front Lighting System is optional, as well as rain-sensing wipers and a new Smart City Brake Support system.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety calls the 2014 Mazda CX-5 a "Top Safety Pick." The NHTSA has not assessed the 2014 Mazda CX-5 for crash protection. Last year, the SUV received a 4-star overall rating from the NHTSA.
TechnologyThe 2014 Mazda CX-5's new Smart City Brake Support works at speeds up to 19 mph, and is designed to recognize when a collision might occur. Initially, the system automatically readies the brakes to provide quicker response when the driver presses the brake pedal. If the driver fails to act, the system can automatically apply the brakes to stop the CX-5 before a collision can occur, or to reduce speed before impact.
