Sport, Touring and Grand Touring trim levels
The 2014 Mazda 6 is a midsize 4-door sedan offered in Sport, Touring and Grand Touring trim levels. The new Mazda 6 is a global vehicle, and is offered as a station wagon in other world markets. Mazda claims it has no plans to offer the station wagon in the United States.
The redesigned 2014 Mazda 6 exhibits the automaker's new Kodo design philosophy, which translates to "Soul of Motion" and which will be applied to all future Mazda products.
The new Mazda 6 is lighter than the car it replaces, and offers a 30% improvement in torsional rigidity, compared with the outgoing model. To improve outward visibility and aerodynamics, Mazda relocated the side mirrors from the windshield pillar to the doors. In some trim levels, the automaker says the coefficient of drag is as low as 0.26 cd.
The 2014 Mazda 6 Sport includes 17-inch aluminum wheels, power side mirrors with integrated turn signal indicators, LED taillights, and dual chrome-tipped exhaust outlets as standard equipment.
Mazda says that the new 2014 Mazda 6's cabin features soft-touch materials on the dashboard and door panels, Dark or Bordeaux metallic trim, and greater interior space than the model it replaces for shoulders, and in the rear-seat area, leg room and knee clearance space. Gauges feature simple white-on-black markings.
Standard equipment for the Sport trim level includes air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, cruise control, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, and push-button starting. The seats are trimmed in cloth, the driver seat offers manual height adjustment, and the rear seat is a 60/40-split folding design. Floor mats, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and a 6-speaker stereo with a CD player, USB port and an auxiliary audio input jack are also standard.
Add the optional automatic transmission, and the 2014 Mazda 6 Sport includes a 5.8-inch color touch-screen display in the upper portion of the dashboard, with surrounding buttons and knobs. Bluetooth hands-free connectivity with streaming audio capability, HD Radio, SMS text messaging capability, Pandora Internet radio interface, and a reversing camera are included with this infotainment system.
Touring trim adds 19-inch aluminum wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, leatherette upholstery, sliding center console armrest, 6-way power driver seat, and a Commander Switch for the center console, used to control the infotainment system. A blind-spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert is also standard on this version of the new 2014 Mazda 6.
A Touring Technology package is optional for the Mazda 6 Touring, and includes a premium surround-sound audio system, satellite radio, navigation system with real-time traffic reports, passive keyless entry system, auto-dimming rearview and driver-side mirrors, heated side mirrors, universal garage door opener, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic headlights. This package also includes Mazda's new Smart City Brake Support System.
Grand Touring trim includes the contents of the Touring Technology package, and adds adaptive bi-xenon headlights, LED halo-ring running lights, fog lights, power sunroof, and a rear spoiler. Inside, the Grand Touring provides leather seats, 8-way power driver seat, 4-way power front passenger seat, heated front seats, and memory for the driver's settings.
A radar-based cruise control system is optional for the Grand Touring model, and includes Forward Obstruction Warning technology. An Advanced package will also be optional, adding these two features plus automatic high-beam headlight control, lane-departure warning system, and i-Eloop brake energy regeneration technology.
Under the Hood
Mazda will offer two engines when the 2014 Mazda 6 goes on sale. The standard power plant is a Skyactiv-G 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine generating 184 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 185 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,250 rpm. A 6-speed manual gearbox is standard with this engine, and a 6-speed automatic transmission is optional.
The upgrade powertrain choice is a Skyactiv-D 2.2-liter 4-cylinder clean diesel engine. Horsepower and torque ratings for this engine are not finalized, but Mazda says the engine's low 14:1 compression ratio allows the engine to burn cleaner, emit fewer nitrogen oxides, and produce almost no diesel soot. Unlike some other diesel engines, Mazda's new Skyactiv-D diesel will not require NOx after-treatments.
Additional technical highlights of the redesigned 2014 Mazda 6 include a front strut, rear multi-link suspension, and new electric steering with Control Assist technology that is designed to provide better on-center steering feel and to reduce steering tug on poor road surfaces.
The 2014 Mazda 6 features new anti-whiplash front seat designs, and all except for the Sport trim with a manual gearbox are equipped with a reversing camera. Available safety features include rain-sensing wipers, an adaptive front-lighting system with high-beam control, forward-collision warning system, blind-spot information system, rear cross-traffic alert system, and a lane-departure warning system. A Smart City Brake Support system is included on the Grand Touring trim to aid in eliminating low-speed collisions with other vehicles and pedestrians.
In addition to the 2014 Mazda 6's Skyactiv powertrains, new i-Eloop (Intelligent Energy Loop) technology helps to conserve fuel. Mazda calls this feature the "world's first capacitor-based regenerative braking system." The idea behind i-Eloop is to capture kinetic energy normally lost when the car is coasting or braking and to store that energy to power the Mazda 6's various electrical components, thereby reducing load on the engine and improving fuel economy by as much as 10%, by Mazda's estimate.
