Last year, Ford substantially overhauled the Mustang Shelby GT500 model, installing what it claims is the most powerful regular production V-8 engine in the world, and modifying the drivetrain, steering, suspension, and braking components accordingly. This year, Ford makes no changes as the Mustang lineup rolls into its final year before a complete redesign.
There is no mistaking a 2014 Shelby GT500 for any other Mustang model. Offered as a coupe or a convertible, this vehicle has different styling including a power-dome aluminum hood with a functional heat extractor, quad exhaust outlets, cobra snake badges, and LeMans racing stripes. Painted forged aluminum wheels, sized 19 inches in diameter in front and 20 inches in back, are standard, with 265/40 front and 285/35 rear performance tires. Standard equipment includes HID headlights, LED fog lights, and LED taillights with sequential turn signals.
The 2014 Shelby GT500 models are equipped with standard leather sport seats with racing stripes, a bright white cue ball shift knob, and a sport steering wheel wrapped in leather and Alcantara suede. Additionally, this model is equipped with silver pedal trim, a premium audio system, Sync AppLink smartphone connectivity, and more.Optional FeaturesThough the 2014 Shelby GT500 starts at $55,445 (including the destination charge), it is offered with several options, starting with the SVT Performance Package, which adds an upgraded differential, electronic adjustable suspension dampers, unique interior trim, and special wheels. Additionally, the Shelby GT500 can be upgraded with a track-ready SVT Track Pack and an Electronics Package containing a navigation system, HD Radio, and dual-zone automatic climate control. This performance car can also be optioned with a full glass roof, an upgraded audio system, heated front seats, and performance-bolstered sport seats.
Under the Hood
Every 2014 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is equipped with a supercharged 5.8-liter V-8 engine generating 662 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 631 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm. A strengthened 6-speed manual gearbox is the only transmission choice, and it delivers the power to the rear wheels through an adjustable traction control system with launch control.
The optional SVT Track Pack adds an external engine oil cooler, a transmission cooler, and a differential cooler. Additionally, the Shelby GT500 is equipped with performance braking components including larger slotted brake discs and 6-piston front calipers.
Ford equips every 2014 Mustang Shelby GT500 with standard MyKey technology, which allows the vehicle's owner to program top vehicle speed and audio volume limits, to prohibit the ability to defeat the traction and stability control systems, to provide an advanced low-fuel warning, and to mute the stereo until the seat belts are fastened.
With the Shelby GT500's standard Track Apps technology, the vehicle can measure and display acceleration times, braking distance, and cornering g-forces. This performance car is also equipped with a Sync hands-free connectivity including AppLink technology, which allows the driver to operate favorite smartphone applications without removing their hands from the steering wheel.
