The last time the Ford Mustang was completely redesigned, the automaker's exploration of retro-futuristic styling had peaked, but not before the company had locked in a 2005 Mustang design strongly influenced by the 1960s. Today, with the Mustang's 50th anniversary just a year away and a redesigned 2015 Mustang set to debut just in time for the festivities, the final edition is rolling into dealer showrooms.
The 2014 Ford Mustang is offered in coupe and convertible body styles and in V6 or GT trim levels. Last year's more powerful Boss 302 model is discontinued, and the high-powered Mustang Shelby GT500 is discussed in a separate article. Standard equipment for the 2014 Mustang V6 Coupe includes high-intensity discharge headlights, LED sequential signaling taillights, an Easy Fuel capless fuel-filler system, and 17-inch aluminum wheels. The Mustang Convertible adds a power soft convertible top.
Designed to seat four people, the Mustang supplies 2+2 seating. Standard equipment for the 2014 Mustang V6 includes air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, tilt steering wheel, cruise control, stereo with a CD player and an auxiliary audio input jack, and MyKey programmable vehicle features.
The 2014 Mustang V6 is offered in a Premium trim level that adds leather seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, 6-way power driver seat, ambient cabin lighting, programmable garage door opener, auto-dimming rearview mirror, aluminum interior accent trim, metallic pedals, and a premium audio system with satellite radio. Technology upgrades include Sync connectivity with AppLink and Track Apps technology, MyColor adjustable gauges, and a 4.2-inch LCD message screen in the gauge cluster. Exterior changes include body-color side mirrors and machined aluminum wheels with painted pockets. Purchasing Premium trim is also a requirement to access exclusive options.
The next trim level on the roster is the 2014 Mustang GT. It is equipped just like the Mustang V6, except that base models come standard with Track Apps technology, and this version of the Mustang is equipped with standard dual exhaust outlets, automatic headlights, LED fog lights, rear spoiler, unique trim inside and out, and a V-8 engine breathing through heat extractors punched into the hood. The Mustang GT also gets revised limited-slip rear axle ratios, body-color side mirrors, and 18-inch aluminum wheels.
Choose the Mustang GT Premium, the vehicle has the same equipment as the V6 Premium, plus a GT Track package with 19-inch wheels, summer performance tires, radiator sourced from the defunct Boss 302, Brembo performance brakes, and revised stability control calibration.
Ford offers a long list of options for the 2014 Mustang. Highlights include a V6 Performance package (19-inch wheels, summer performance tires, and suspension and braking upgrades); Comfort package (heated seats, heated side mirrors, power front passenger seat); Electronics package (navigation, dual-zone automatic climate control); and a Tech package (Sync, LED fog lights, auto-dimming rearview mirror, 6-way power driver seat).
Two Appearance packages debut for 2014. The FP6 Appearance package is optional for the Mustang V6, adding a gloss black spoiler and mirror trim, side window louvers, and 18-inch gloss black aluminum wheels. The FP8 Appearance package is optional for the Mustang GT, including the same items as the FP6 package but with 18-inch wheels instead of 19-inch wheels.
Additional cosmetic upgrade packages include a V6 Pony package, a Mustang Club of America Special Edition, and a California Special package. The 2014 Mustang can also be optioned with remote engine starting, reversing camera, Shaker Pro sound system, Recaro performance seats, glass roof (Mustang Coupe), body stripes, special paint, upgraded wheels, Brembo brakes, and more.
Under the Hood
Mustang V6 models are equipped with a 3.7-liter V-6 engine delivering 305 horsepower, while Mustang GT models are powered by a 5.0-liter V-8 engine delivering 420 horsepower. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard, delivering power to the vehicle's rear wheels. A 6-speed automatic transmission is optional. Fuel economy ranges from 15 mpg in the city for a Mustang GT with a manual transmission to 31 mpg on the highway for a Mustang V6 with an automatic transmission, according to the EPA.
All Mustangs except the standard V6 model are equipped with Sync hands-free connectivity, which includes 911 Assist emergency services. With 911 Assist, a paired phone contacts 9-1-1 when the vehicle's air bags deploy, contacting emergency services. Additionally, the 2014 Mustang is equipped with standard blind-spotter side mirrors, and safety-related options include rear parking-assist sensors, and a reversing camera system.
Every 2014 Ford Mustang is equipped with MyKey technology, which allows vehicle owners to program vehicle speed limits, stereo volume limits, seat belt usage chimes, and more. A navigation system with real-time traffic reporting is optional, as well as Sync AppLink technology, with voice-controlled audible text messaging service and the ability to run smartphone applications such as Pandora Internet radio.
