The Volvo XC60 is Volvo's midsize crossover luxury SUV: a family hauler that comes with a wealth of standard and optional features. It was first introduced to the U.S. market in 2008, and is now Volvo's top-selling model. Volvo emphasizes the XC60's safety, smooth ride, and passenger-friendly features. In the United States, the Volvo XC60's competitors include the Nissan Murano, Audi Q5, and Mercedes-Benz GLK350, among others.

The 2013 Volvo XC60 is offered in three models: XC60 3.2, XC60 T6, and the XC60 T6 R-Design. The 3.2 is available in the base, Premier, Premier Plus, and Platinum trim levels; the T6 and T6-R-design are offered in base, Premier Plus, and Platinum trim levels. The 3.2 comes standard with FWD; the other two models employ AWD.

Exterior Features

The 2013 Volvo XC60 is offered in nine colors: basic black and white and metallic red, dark blue, Seashell, bronze, black, silver, and grey. The metallic colors carry an additional charge. The base 3.2 model features 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights with headlight washers, roof rails, automatic wipers, and heated mirrors. The Premier trim level adds silver-painted roof rails, keyless entry and ignition, a sunroof, and tinted rear windows. Those features are standard on the T6 and T6 R-design models. The Premier Plus trim level steps up to active dual xenon headlights, power liftgate, cargo cover, and front and rear park-assist sensors. The T6 R-Design adds 20-inch alloy wheels, a sportier suspension, and twin chrome exhausts.

Interior Features

Standard interior features on the Volvo XC60 3.2 model include dual-zone climate control, cruise control, cloth upholstery, 8-speaker sound system, leather-wrapped tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, auto-dimming rearview mirror, power front seats, split-folding 40/20/40 rear seats, and full power accessories. The Premier trim level adds leather upholstery and a power passenger seat, which are standard on the T6 and T6 R-Design models. The Platinum trim level adds a 12-speaker sound system, navigation system, and rearview camera. The T6 R-Design adds distinctive styling elements, a sport steering wheel, and sport seats. With rear seats folded, maximum cargo space is 67 cubic feet.

Optional Features

Several option packages are available with the Volvo XC60. A Climate package adds heat to the front and rear seats, heated windshield washer nozzles, and Volvo's proprietary air filtration system. The Technology package includes adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, and a variety of extra safety features. Optional equipment on all models includes wood inlay accents, dual two-stage child booster seats, a blind-spot monitoring system, remote ignition, cargo compartment mat, steel cargo organizer, front bumper bar, illuminated sill moldings, rear-seat entertainment system, rear skid plate, running boards and mudflaps (packaged together), side scuff plates, trailer hitch, park-assist camera with Front Blind View, portable navigation system, exterior styling kit, and the Polestar performance software.

Under the Hood

The Volvo XC60 3.2 is powered by a 3.2-liter, 240-horsepower inline 6-cylinder engine that produces 236 lb.-ft. of torque. Front-wheel drive and a 6-speed automatic transmission are standard; AWD is optional. The XC60 T6 features a 3.0-liter, turbocharged, inline 6-cylinder engine rated at 300 horsepower and 325 lb.-ft. of torque, and works with AWD. The T6 R-design features a more powerful version of that engine: it's rated at 325 horsepower and 354 lb.-ft. of torque.

Fuel Economy

EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Volvo XC60 are:

  • XC60 3.2 with FWD: 19/25/21 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • XC60 3.2 with AWD: 18/24/20 mpg
  • XC60 T6 and T6 R-Design: 17/23/20 mpg

Standard safety features on the Volvo XC60 include anti-lock brakes, active front head restraints, front side air bags, and side curtain air bags. A blind-spot monitoring system and other safety enhancements are optional--including a proprietary pedestrian-detection system that can apply full braking force in emergency situations.

In government crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2013 Volvo XC60 received 5 (out of 5) stars for front- and side-impact protection, and 4 stars for rollover protection. In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the XC60 received "Good" ratings--the Institute's highest--for all impact protection tests.

Volvo's optional Polestar Performance software enhances throttle response, torque and power, according to the manufacturer, without increasing the certified fuel consumption or affecting the vehicle's original warranty. The software re-calibrates hundreds of parameters that control the engine to increase the turbocharger boost pressure, re-optimize the ignition and fuel mapping, and re-calibrate the throttle response. Polestar Performance can be installed by any Volvo dealer.
