Although it appears to be a 2-door Jetta coupe, the 2013 Volkswagen Eos is a hardtop convertible that delivers the fun of a drop-top Beetle balanced with the premium feel of a Passat or CC, according to Volkswagen.
Compared with the 2012 model it replaces, the 2013 Eos is unchanged, with the exception of a new Sport trim level positioned above the base Komfort and below the Lux and Executive variants.
While it may be the entry-level trim level, the Eos Komfort is well equipped with heated power turn signal mirrors, power tilt/slide moonroof, dual exhaust tips, 17-inch alloy wheels, heated washer nozzles, and front fog lights complemented by LED taillights. Overhead is a power-retractable hardtop with a heated rear glass window.
Volkswagen differentiates the new-for-2013 Eos Sport from the base Komfort by adding 18-inch alloy wheels, rear spoiler, and adaptive HID headlights with LED daytime running lights. Lux and Executive trim levels contribute parking sensors and power-folding mirrors, as well as unique 18-inch alloy wheel designs.
Inside, the VW Eos Komfort is home to dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth connectivity and streaming audio, satellite radio service, leather-wrapped tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, glovebox cooler, and an 8-speaker touch-screen audio system boasting satellite and HD Radio service, 6-disc CD changer, and an SD card slot. The list of standard amenities goes on to include leatherette upholstery, power driver's seat with 12-way adjustment, rear-seat pass-through, heated front seats, and a removable rear windblocker. The new Eos Sport trim level adds only paddle shifters.
With the Lux, Volkswagen introduces several more premium features to the lineup, among which buyers will find a power front-passenger seat with 12-way adjustment, leather upholstery, push-button start, and a touch-screen navigation system. The Eos Executive caps things off with a rearview camera, premium audio system, and upgraded navigation offering real-time traffic and weather information.
All of the features available on the 2013 Volkswagen Eos are packaged into the four trim levels, meaning there are no factory options. With that said, buyers can purchase splash guards, all-season floor mats, and other accessories from their dealer.
Under the Hood
Volkswagen equips the 2013 Eos with a power plant shared with the GTI and Tiguan, among others. It's a turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that delivers 200 horsepower and 207 lb.-ft. of torque to the front wheels. The one and only transmission is a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic featuring manual and sport modes.
Sport, Lux and Executive models are equipped with a performance-tuned suspension, though the Sport is set up to sit slightly lower.
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Volkswagen Eos are 22/30/25 mpg (city/highway/combined).
The 2013 Volkswagen Eos's standard safety features include 4 air bags, rear rollover bars, front active head restraints, traction control, electronic-locking differential, 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, and brake assist. All Eos models also come with a brake disc wipe system that causes brief and light contact between the calipers and discs, resulting in optimal stopping capability in wet conditions.
In crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2013 Volkswagen Eos received a "Good" rating--the Institute's highest--for moderate side-impact crash protection. As this preview is written, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not rated the crashworthiness of the 2013 Volkswagen Eos.
