Traditionally, the Toyota Avalon has competed against full-size sedans, but with the redesigned 2013 Avalon, Toyota says it is moving the car into the "premium midsize" segment. Designed, engineered, and built in the United States, the Avalon is said to be constructed of more than 90-percent U.S.-sourced parts.
The new 2013 Toyota Avalon rides on the same size wheelbase as the model it replaces, but is shorter in length, wider in track, and sits lower to the ground. Toyota says the redesigned Avalon is a "premium midsize" car.
Despite the fact that it is smaller, Toyota says that rear-seat leg room remains about the same, and that the trunk is larger than the outgoing model. Toyota retains as much interior volume as is possible by lowering the front seats, scooping out additional head room, and installing a concave dashboard design in front of the front-seat passenger. Additional sound-deadening material makes the Avalon quieter inside, according to Toyota.
Toyota plans to offer white ambient cabin lighting, triple-zone automatic climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, JBL Synthesis premium sound, a hard-drive navigation system, and an Entune multi-media system with full smartphone integration.
Under the Hood
At the time that the new 2013 Toyota Avalon debuted at the 2012 New York Auto Show, the only hint provided about what might be under its hood was that the Avalon is equipped with a V-6 engine. Toyota said it would reveal "more about powertrain advancements this spring."
Toyota does confirm that the new Avalon will offer driver-selected Eco, Normal and Power modes that calibrate throttle and steering operation and response accordingly. Additionally, Toyota asserts that the new Avalon features an improved ride quality and more dynamic handling.
The new 2013 Toyota Avalon features 10 standard air bags, including knee air bags for the front-seat occupants and rear-seat side-impact air bags. Traction and stability control, anti-lock brakes with brake assist, and Smart Stop technology which, according to the automaker, makes it impossible for the Avalon to accelerate when the brake pedal is depressed, also come standard.
Additionally, the new Avalon is available with a rearview camera, Dynamic Radar cruise control system, Pre-Collision System, blind-spot monitoring, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.
