U.S. car buyers may not be snapping up 2-door hardtops like they once did, but perhaps the story would be different if models like the 2013 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class were priced for the masses.
This sophisticated luxury coupe is carried over for 2013 in AWD CL550 4Matic form, as well as RWD CL600, CL63 AMG, and CL65 AMG trim levels. A new Grand Edition package is being offered to CL550 4Matic buyers only.
Amenities found on the exterior of the 2013 Mercedes-Benz CL550 4Matic include dual exhaust tips, adaptive HID headlights, power tilt/slide moonroof, electronic trunk closer, heated headlight washers, 18-inch alloy wheels, and power-adjustable auto-dimming turn signal mirrors. The CL600 adds a rearview camera and 19-inch alloy wheels.
Mercedes has rolled out the full AMG treatment for the CL63, as evidenced by that model's 20-inch alloy wheels, sport exhaust with four trapezoidal chrome tips, revised grille and front bumper design, and lower body kit. The CL65 AMG coupe looks much the same, except for oval exhaust tips and a chrome strip accentuating the bottom of the front air dam.
Inside, the 2013 Mercedes-Benz CL550 4Matic coupe is equipped with a central controller connected to an 8-inch center display, rear power sunshade, leather-wrapped and wood-trimmed steering wheel, Bluetooth connectivity, navigation system, push-button start, leather upholstery, and a surround-sound system featuring satellite radio service. The driver and front passenger are also treated to heated and cooled power seats with memory and 14-way adjustment. Mercedes dials things up a notch in the CL600 by adding heated and cooled power rear seats with 8-way adjustment, upgraded leather upholstery, Alcantara headliner, and massaging front seats.
Both AMG models are upgraded with premium leather upholstery, front sport seats, unique steering wheel, and gauges that include a lap timer.
Several factory options are available for the 2013 Mercedes-Benz CL550 4Matic coupe, such as a Premium 2 package offering a rearview camera and massaging seats, Driver Assistance package comprised of brake stand-by technology as well as blind-spot monitoring and lane-departure warning systems, Sport packages with unique wheels and a lower body kit, and a Splitview dash-mounted screen that can display different information to the driver and front passenger. A new Grand Edition package is also available for 2013, and includes sporty exterior upgrades, one of three premium leather choices, burl walnut or black ash wood trim, 19-inch AMG or 20-inch alloy wheels, and Mocha Black, Platinum Black, or Magno Cashmere White exterior paint.
Options are similar for the CL600, CL63 AMG, and CL65 AMG models. Exceptions include the Grand Edition package, which is limited to the CL550 4Matic, and an AMG Performance package offered on the CL63 that adds a carbon fiber engine cover and delivers an extra 27 horsepower and 74 lb.-ft. of torque.
Under the Hood
Mercedes-Benz equips the 2013 CL550 4Matic with a direct-injection, 4.6-liter, twin-turbocharged V-8 engine that delivers 429 horsepower and 516 lb.-ft. of torque. A 7-speed automatic transmission features steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters and directs output to all four wheels. This powertrain is complemented by an auto-leveling air bag suspension offering comfort and sport settings.
The CL600 is a RWD model fitted with a 5.5-liter, twin-turbocharged V-12 engine that generates 510 horsepower and 612 lb.-ft. of torque, all of which is managed by a 5-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. Here, engineers have utilized Mercedes' active body control suspension, which constantly monitors and instantly counteracts pitch, dive, and lean.
The lesser of the two high-performance AMG models, the CL63 features a hand-built, direct-injection, 5.5-liter, twin-turbocharged V-8 engine that creates 536 horsepower and 590 lb.-ft. of torque. In this case, Mercedes employs a 7-speed multi-clutch automated manual gearbox with paddle shifters and three modes: controlled-efficiency, sport, and manual. The CL600's suspension has been recalibrated for use on the CL63 and CL65 AMG models.
For the ultimate 2013 CL-Class driving experience, Mercedes offers the CL65 AMG, home to a hand-built, 6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V-12 engine delivering 621 horsepower and 738 lb.-ft. of torque, and paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission that features aluminum paddle shifters and comfort, sport, and manual settings. Mercedes claims the 2013 CL65 AMG can reach 60 mph in only 4.3 seconds.

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class' standard safety components include 9 air bags, LED taillights and daytime running lights, front active head restraints, traction control, front and rear park-assist sensors, Attention Assist (sends audible and visual alerts when sensors determine driver may be drowsy), torque vectoring brake technology (also known as cornering brake control), and 4-wheel anti-lock ventilated disc brakes featuring brake assist. Each 2013 CL-Class also features Mbrace2, which alerts authorities in case of emergency and allows limits to be placed on vehicle speed and travel area, capability Mercedes-Benz suggests is helpful when the car is put in the hands of young drivers.
