2013 Ford Fusion Preview

The redesigned 2013 Ford Fusion is a midsize family sedan that receives numerous upgrades this year.

Exterior Features

To improve fuel economy, the new Fusion features active grille shutters and full underbody shields for better aerodynamics, Ford says. Projector-beam headlights and LED taillights are standard, and the Fusion's trunk measures 16 cubic feet. A variety of wheel sizes and designs are available, ranging from 16 to 19 inches in diameter.

Interior Features

In addition to added sound-deadening material and improved aerodynamics, which are designed to make the new 2013 Fusion's interior quieter, Ford employs soy foam seat cushions and fabric woven from recycled materials to help reduce the car's ecological footprint.

Optional Features

The new Fusion is available in S, SE and Titanium trim levels. Most options are reserved for the SE model. Next-generation Sync wireless connectivity with MyFord Touch information, navigation and entertainment technology now includes the ability to turn the Fusion into a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot. A power sunroof, Sony premium audio system, dual-zone automatic climate control, and leather seats with 10-way power front-seat adjustment are just a few of the options offered for the Fusion. Additionally, the new Fusion can be equipped with a reversing camera, ambient cabin lighting, and Active Park Assist.

Under the Hood

Ford offers five different powertrain choices for the new 2013 Fusion. The standard engine is a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder making 170 horsepower. It comes with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Two direct-injected, turbocharged 4-cylinder engines are available. The 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine makes 179 horsepower and comes with a standard 6-speed manual transmission and fuel-saving Auto Stop/Start technology. A 6-speed automatic is optional. The 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine generates 237 horsepower and is connected to a 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters. All-wheel drive is optional with this engine.

The 2013 Fusion Hybrid is equipped with a 2.0-liter, Atkinson-cycle 4-cylinder engine and an electric assist motor powered by lithium-ion batteries that are recharged by a regenerative braking system. Making a combined 185 horsepower, the Fusion Hybrid can operate at speeds up to 62 mph without the gas engine running, Ford says.

A new Fusion Hybrid Energi model is a plug-in version of the Fusion Hybrid and offers short-range, pure-electric driving capability. The Energi model can be recharged using a standard 120-volt household outlet or a 240-volt outlet.

Fuel Economy

Final EPA fuel-economy estimates are not available for the 2013 Fusion as this preview is published. Ford is projecting that the 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine will get 26 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway, and that the Fusion Hybrid will return 47 mpg city/44 mpg highway. The Fusion Energi is expected to do better than 100 MPGe.


The 2013 Ford Fusion is equipped with 8 standard air bags, including knee air bags for front-seat occupants. Four-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes, and a traction and stability control system, are also standard.

The available Sync system includes 911 Assist, which activates with air bag deployment and in the presence of a paired smartphone to help speed rescue after a collision. Additional safety options for the new Fusion include a reversing camera, adaptive cruise control, Collision Warning with Brake Support, a blind-spot information system with Cross Traffic Alert, and a Lane Keeping System that includes lane-departure warning, Lane Keep Assist, and drowsy-driver detection.
