Introduction

Audi will replace the A4 Avant with the new A4 Allroad for the 2013 model year. The A4 Allroad is wider and taller than the A4 Avant, and features additional ground clearance combined with crossover SUV styling cues.

Exterior Features

The new 2013 Audi A4 Allroad is essentially last year's Audi A4 Avant equipped with crossover SUV styling cues and greater ground clearance for light off-roading capability. The Allroad's distinguishing exterior cues include stainless steel front and rear skid plates, stainless steel side sills, gray matte-finish lower body trim, and aluminum-optic roof rails. The new Audi Allroad also comes with a standard panoramic sunroof, and rides on 18-inch aluminum wheels.

Interior Features

Inside, the Audi A4 Allroad is equipped with real aluminum dashboard trim and 8-way power front seats. The crossover SUV offers 27 cubic feet of luggage space behind the rear seat, and a maximum of 50 cubic feet of cargo room with the rear seat folded down.

Optional Features

Audi offers numerous ways to upgrade the new 2013 Audi A4 Allroad. Highlights from the options menu include a set of 19-inch aluminum wheels, body-color exterior trim, power tailgate, 12-way power front sport seats, heated front seats, and a premium Bang & Olufsen audio system. Dynamic steering that varies both the effort level and the steering ratio depending on vehicle speed is also available, along with a 3-spoke steering wheel featuring shift paddles.

For 2013, all Audi A4 models, including the new Allroad wagon, can be optioned with Audi Connect. Audi Connect provides wireless Internet connectivity for up to 8 onboard devices, turning the A4 Allroad into a rolling Wi-Fi hotspot. Audi Connect features Google Earth maps for the navigation system, Google Local Search capability, and real-time traffic, weather, and news reporting.

Under the Hood

The 2013 Audi A4 Allroad is equipped with the automaker's turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. This powerplant generates 211 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. An 8-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission with manual shift capability delivers power to the A4 Allroad's standard Quattro all-wheel-drive system. Quattro sends 60% of the motive force to the Allroad's rear wheels under normal operating conditions, and can vary power distribution as conditions warrant.

Fuel Economy

The EPA has not issued fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 A4 Allroad as this preview is published. To get an idea of how it might perform in this regard, the 2012 Audi A4 Avant Quattro is rated to get 21 mpg in the city, 29 mpg on the highway, and 24 mpg in combined driving. Audi's turbocharged 4-cylinder requires premium fuel.

Safety

The 2013 Audi A4 Allroad is equipped with traction and stability control, a 4-wheel-disc anti-lock braking system with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, and up to 8 air bags. Optional safety features include an adaptive front lighting system that helps to see around dark corners, an Audi Side Assist blind-spot monitoring system that lets the driver know when other vehicles are traveling in adjacent lanes, and an Active Lane Assist system that works with Audi Side Assist to help keep the driver from wandering out of his or her lane or from hitting a car traveling in the Allroad's blind spot. An adaptive cruise control system is also available, and includes a stop & go feature for use in traffic.
