TT RS model may arrive in the States
The Audi TTfirst appeared as a concept car at the Frankfurt Motor Showin 1995. The exterior and interior design was unique compared to theother "2+2" coupes on the market. Audiofficially unveiled theproduction model in late 1998. In 1999, the coupe was joined by adrop-top convertible with minor styling changes. The new "Roadster"gave up the rear seats in exchange for a power-operated softconvertible top. In addition, the Roadster's windshield frame andaluminum side sills were reinforced for greater rigidity.
An all-new TT and Roadster debuted in 2008. The new car utilizedAudiSpace Frame (ASF) technology (also featured in the automaker's flagshipA8 luxury liner; in the A2, aEuropean model that ended production in2005; and in the R8)that combined aluminum and steel in the chassis toimprove weight distribution, thus improving handling, according toAudi. The new TT was offered with 4- and 6-cylinder powerplants, and achoice between front- and all-wheel drive (Audi's "quattro" permanentall-wheel-drive system). The 2011 model year marks a refresh for theAudi TT as it receives a new front and rear fascia, new tail lamps, newexhaust trim, plus an upgraded 4-cylinder engine (taking the place ofthe outgoing 6-cylinder offering).
Audi offers its TT in three different flavors. First is the standardTT, fitted with a new-for-2011 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. Thepowerplant is rated at 208 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque (upfrom last year's 197 hp and 207 lb.-ft. of torque). While the 2010 AudiTT was offered in a front-wheel-drive configuration, with a 6-speedmanual transmission, the 2011 models all receive standard quattroall-wheel drive and Audi's "S tronic" 6-speed dual-clutch automatictransmission (the sole exception is the TT RS with its standard 6-speedmanual).
Moving up a notch in performance is the TTS model. Not only does itreceive a host of performance enhancements, but is also fitted with atuned variant of last year's 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder rated at265 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. Lastly, and not yetofficially coming to the States, is the TT RS. That limited-editionmodel features a 2.5-liter turbocharged 5-cylinder engine ratedat 340 horsepower and 332 lb.-ft. of torque-and a longlist of performance enhancements befitting the flagship model.TechnologyIn an uncommon move, Audi has replaced its 2.0-liter turbocharged4-cylinder with another 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder-and gainedincreased horsepower, torque and fuel efficiency in the process. Thenew engine, called the "2.0-liter TFSI," is more advanced than itspredecessor. It now features variable valve lift on the exhaust side ofthe engine-to improve the combustion process. The result is a smalljump in horsepower, but a huge improvement in torque. The torque figure(258 lb.-ft.) is enough to send even the base TT to 60 mph in just over6 seconds, according to Audi.
