Introduction

It's finally official: GM will build the long-awaited, fifth-generation Chevrolet Camaro starting in mid-February 2009. Coup_ versions will go on sale in spring 2009, while the convertible is set to bow in summer. Both will be 2010 models. Revealed at the GM Design Center in July 2008, the production 2010 Camaro is remarkably close to the Chevy Camaro Concept-with some interior design cues inspired by the 1969 Camaro. Design features include a long hood, full-width grille and short deck on the exterior, plus the retro touches inside.

The return of the pony car after an absence of more than six years (GM discontinued the Camaro in 2002) already has fans ready to order. Base LS, LT, and SS models will be available, with V-6 and V-8 engines, a full complement of standard safety equipment, and a long list of options. Production begins in mid-February 2009 at the GM Oshawa, Ont. production facility.

Model Lineup

Three 2010 Chevrolet Camaro coup_ models will be available: base LS, LT and SS, followed by a convertible model in the summer. V-6 and V-8 engines, manual and automatic transmissions will be available. The new Camaro will have a full complement of standard equipment and safety features, an appropriate list of optional equipment, and a reported long queue of potential buyers. While a full list of standard features hasn't been announced (that will come closer to production), there will be OnStar, XM satellite radio, remote keyless entry and more. Look for optional leather seats, premium audio systems, dual-zone climate control, maybe even a Corvette-style head-up display. An RS appearance package will also be available on Camaro LT and SS models, and will include high-intensity-discharge headlamps with integrated halo rings, spoiler, specific taillamps and 20-inch wheels.

Hardware

Power has always been a Camaro characteristic. The rear-drive 2010 Camaro models will be available with one of three engines: a 300-hp, 3.6-liter, V-6 dual overhead cam engine with variable valve timing, available in LS and LT; and two 6.2-liter V-8 engines-a 400-hp (L99) and 422-hp (LS3). Both 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions will be available. In true muscle car fashion, all that power needs standard 4-wheel disc ABS, along with electronic stability and integrated traction control. The new Camaro also features front and rear independent suspension. Along with standard 18-inch wheels, there will be 19-inch and 20-inch sizes available on LT and SS models, respectively.

Safety

The all-new, 2010 Chevrolet Camaro will sport the latest safety features, including driver and front-passenger dual-stage air bags, driver and front-passenger seat-mounted thorax side-impact air bags, head curtain side-impact air bags for front- and rear-seat occupants, and front safety belt load limiters and pre-tensioners. In addition, standard OnStar service with Advanced Crash Response system automatically sends a signal to an OnStar operator after a crash.

Technology

Technology features on the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro include Bluetooth phone connectivity for hands-free phone operation; premium Boston Acoustics audio; USB connectivity; ultrasonic rear parking assist (with late availability); remote vehicle start; OnStar, and XM satellite radio. In addition, the new Camaro has frameless door windows with automatic indexing glass.
