2009 Ford Glass Roof Mustang Preview

  • New panoramic all-glass roof option for 2009 Ford Mustang

  • Available as a $1,995 option on Mustang V-6 and GT

  • Specially formulated glass protects against heat and sun damage

  • Automotive safety glass shatters with no sharp edges

Starting in 2009, Ford will offer Mustang buyers the mother of all sunroofs: a one-piece, all-glass roof, which will be offered as a $1,995 option on Mustang V-6 and GT models. According to Ford, "the new roof provides customers a less expensive option than a convertible, without compromising the coupe's versatility, headroom or climate-controlled environment."

HardwareThe glass used for the roof on the 2009 Ford Mustang with glass roof option is tinted to reduce infrared rays, reducing interior temperature and cool-down times, Ford says. A layer of vinyl laminated into the glass reduces noise, and a manual sliding blind allows occupants to block out light completely, the automaker explains. During development, Ford tested their designs for water and air leakage, durability, and vehicle dynamics.

The glass roof employs standard automotive safety glass, similar to that found in side windows. It is designed to shatter into small pieces with no sharp edges. According to Ford, the Glass Roof Mustang is built like a coupe and is designed to maintain the structural integrity of the steel-roof Mustang.
