Introduction

Chevrolet added the Aveo subcompact in 2004 as its lowest-priced car. Based on a design by the defunct Korean automaker Daewoo, the Aveo was offered as a 4-door sedan or 4-door hatchback. The sedan received fresh styling inside and out for 2007, while the hatchback carried on with only a name change to Aveo5 (for five doors, including that rear hatch). For 2009, the Aveo5 gets fresh styling to catch up to its sedan sibling.

The 2009 Chevrolet Aveo5 will use the same Daewoo-derived platform as the 2004-2008 hatchback, but will have different styling inside and out. Overall length grows by 2.2 inches, while width and height are up only slightly. The Aveo5 has seating for up to five and 42.9 cubic feet of cargo room with the rear seats folded. Chevrolet says it expects the Aveo5 to be the lowest-priced car in America.

Model Lineup

The 2009 Chevrolet Aveo5 will be offered in three trim levels: base, LS and LT. Base models will have a tilt steering wheel; cloth upholstery; 6-way adjustable driver's seat with lumbar adjustment; center console; 60/40-split folding second-row seat; AM/FM radio with 4 speakers; rear cargo cover; rear defogger; rear wiper/washer; OnStar assistance with one-year subscription; and P185/60R14 tires on steel wheels with hubcaps. The LS model will add air conditioning, interior air filter, and an auxiliary input jack for MP3 players. The LT will get cruise control; steering wheel audio controls; heated power mirrors; power windows and locks; remote keyless entry; AM/FM/CD stereo with 6 speakers; XM satellite radio; fog lights; and P185/55R15 tires on aluminum wheels. Options will include a rear spoiler and a sunroof.

Hardware

The 2009 Chevrolet Aveo5 will come with one engine and two transmissions. The engine is a 1.6-liter dual-overhead cam 4-cylinder that adds variable valve timing for 2009. The new engine will have four more horsepower than the 1.6-liter unit in the 2008 model, and Chevrolet says it will get eight percent better fuel economy. Total output will be 107 hp at 6400 rpm and 106 lb.-ft. of torque at 3800 rpm. A 5-speed manual transmission will be standard and a 4-speed automatic will be optional. EPA estimated fuel economy numbers are 27 mpg city/34 mpg highway with the manual transmission and 24 mpg city/34 mpg highway with the automatic transmission. Chevrolet says the Aveo5 will have engine and sound-proofing enhancements to make it quieter than the last model.

The front suspension uses MacPherson struts with offset coil springs and a stabilizer bar. The rear suspension is a semi-independent torsion beam axle with coil springs and gas shocks. The brakes are front discs and rear drums.

Safety

Standard safety equipment on the 2009 Chevrolet Aveo5 will include dual-stage front air bags with a passenger-seat sensor; head- and torso-protecting, seat-mounted front side-impact air bags; and a tire-pressure monitor. LS and LT models will be available with anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution.

Technology

The available automatic transmission on the 2009 Chevrolet Aveo5 will have a Hold Control Mode. Chevrolet says this helps reduce wheel spin and traction loss on slick roads by allowing the driver to select and hold a higher gear.
