The multi-year trend favoring smaller, reasonably-priced trailers and campers continued into the first quarter of 2019. Starting with travel trailers, standard hitch units are essentially bridging the gap between a weak 2017 and a stronger 2018, bringing 5% less money than last year. Fifth wheel trailers are performing essentially identically to the previous two years.
Looking at motorhomes, Class A values are currently 2.5% below 2018, similar to a relatively weak 2017. Class C units are performing similarly to last year, starting on a relatively strong note but losing value later in the first quarter. Currently, the Class C segment is bringing 3.9% less money than last year.
Camping trailers and truck campers are seeing healthy demand. Camping trailers are performing similarly to a strong 2018, while truck campers are averaging very slightly behind last year but with positive directional movement similar to 2015 and 2016.
Looking forward, macroeconomic data is coming back down to Earth after an extremely strong first quarter of 2018. The recreational vehicle industry should continue to see demand in line with last year, with the gap between lower-priced and higher-priced units continuing to widen.
