The industry started the year on mixed footing, with only the camping trailer and truck camper segments performing better than last year. Age and economic demographics continue to predict strength in these segments. Conversely, these same factors point to less strength in fifth wheel trailers and class A motorhomes.
Looking at travel trailers, standard hitch models performed generally on par with previous years in the first quarter, coming in 11% higher than last year but about 3% behind the longer-term average. Fifth wheel models continue to lose value, although depreciation relaxed in 2017. Average values for fifth wheels in the first quarter of 2018 and 2017 were essentially equal, at about 14% lower than 2016 and 2015.
Moving over to motorhomes, class As continue to depreciate, with the first quarter of 2018 mildly higher than the same period of 2017, but well below the same period of 2016 and 2015. This segment has lost about 8% of its value since 2015. Class C motorhomes have performed better, starting the year just under 1% ahead of last year. We expect a mild to moderate seasonal bump in the second quarter, as in previous years.
