Nissan’s 2018 Titan XD heavy-duty (HD) large pickup, slots above Nissan’s Titan light-duty (LD) pickup and is called an “in-between†truck because it outpaces half-ton LD trucks but lacks capabilities of three-quarter ton HD rivals such as Ford F-250, Chevy Silverado 2500 or Ram 2500. Titan XD arrived in 2004 and was last redesigned on a new robust frame in 2016. Built at Nissan’s plant in Canton, MS, Titan XD is a bold, competitive hauler. A new King Cab, designed by Nissan’s studio in San Diego, CA, with a cabin that seats six was added in 2017.
2018 Nissan Titan XD 4x4 models feature a transfer case designed to distribute maximum power across gears, when torque is needed for extra traction in snow, ice, sand, mud, gravel or water at a commercial site. Off-road capability adds features such as hill-descent control, hill-start assist and brake limited-slip differential. Extra available towing aids include: integrated trailer brake controller, trailer sway control, tow/haul mode with downhill speed control and a trailer light check system that one person can operate.
The base S trim comes with 40/20/40 split front bench and cloth seating, 5.0-in. display screen, 4-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, USB port, rearview camera, keyless entry/start plus 17-in alloy wheels. PRO-4X trim is set up for off-road applications with 18-in alloy wheels, Bilstein shocks, skid plates and LED lighting systems. SL and Platinum Reserve upscale trims include 12-speaker Rockford Fosgate audiophile system, 20-in. wheels, remote start and parking sensors plus Around View (4-camera) system.
The 2018 Nissan Titan XD’s interior is set up with a user friendly layout of switches, driver controls and storage spaces. In the Crew Cab, second-row storage features a lock lid for security and integrated fold flat floor. A center console can hold a 15-in. laptop.
Ergonomic “zero gravity†seats across trims are enhanced for comfortable long distance drives. Front seats are available with heating and cooling in water repellant cloth fabric, while upscale trims feature two-tone perforated leather seats and Platinum upgrade features luxury leather and wood interior with a litany of premium extras.
Nissan’s Midnight Edition “blackout†package is available on Crew Cab Diesel SV trims (4x2 and 4x4) and SL trims (4x4). Body-colored grille with black inserts plus matching front, rear bumpers, dark headlights “Midnight Edition†badging, black fog lamp finishers, mirrors, door handles, interior trim, step rails and 20-in. black alloy wheels complete the appearance group. Â
A total of 18 equipment packages are offered, including a factory-partner lift kit with adjustable coilover shocks to provide up to 3 inches of suspension lift. A rear entertainment system is only available on Platinum Reserve trim upgrade.
Under the Hood:
A mighty Cummins 5.0-liter Turbo Diesel that produces 310 horsepower and 555 lb.-ft. of torque matched with a heavy-duty Aisin 6-speed automatic is a work truck choice over a standard 5.6-liter V-8 that is rated at 390 horsepower and 394 lb.-ft. of torque partnered with a 7-speed automatic
Nissan’s Titan XD is an HD large pickup so fuel economy is not rated by the EPA.
Nissan’s advanced air bag system with sensors and supplemental air bags are standard with 3-point seat belts and LATCH child seat system. The 2018 Nissan Titan XD has not been crash tested or rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Â
The 2018 Nissan Titan XD is available with NissanConnect with navigation, 7.0-in. color touch screen plus optional SiriusXM subscription with traffic and travel link. The rearview camera is standard and a few advanced technology assistance systems are available: blind-spot monitor, front and rear parking sensors and rear-cross traffic alert.
