IntroductionIn 2013, Ford sold an F-150 truck every 41 seconds, and if you lined them up end to end, they would have stretched from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific. The company doesn't take the best-selling vehicle in America lightly, and the redesigned 2015 Ford F-150 reflects the level of dedication to keeping it atop the sales charts.
Ford claims to have driven the all-new 2015 F-150 more than 10 million miles during its development, towing and hauling maximum weight across deserts and over mountains in temperatures ranging from 20 below zero to 120 degrees. The new F-150 also ran the Baja 1000 last year, disguised as a current model but equipped with the truck's newest powertrain, new frame, and other components that survived the 883-mile race needing nothing but regular air filter changes.
As a result of this developmental effort, Ford has filed more than 100 patents associated with the redesigned F-150, which goes on sale in the latter half of 2014.
Exterior FeaturesThe 2015 Ford F-150 will be offered in Regular, SuperCab, and SuperCrew cab styles combined with various box sizes and powertrain configurations. Initially, XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum trim levels will be available.
All trims resemble both the outgoing F-150 and the Atlas concept truck shown last year. Thanks to a stronger but lighter fully-boxed high-strength steel frame and military-grade aluminum alloy body construction, the new 2015 F-150 weighs as much as 700 lbs. less than the old model. Highlights of the new F-150's appearance include a wider stance, box-side steps for shortbed models, and rear doors for the SuperCab that open to nearly a 180-degree angle.
Chrome trim and aluminum wheels are standard for the F-150 XLT, while the Lariat adds LED box lighting and a reversing camera with Trailer Hitch Assist. King Ranch versions include running boards, 2-tone paint, remote-release tailgate, and LED puddle and spotlights in the mirrors. The Platinum gets 20-inch polished aluminum wheels, power-deploying running boards, and LED headlights and taillights.
Interior FeaturesFord redesigned the 2015 F-150's interior, adding rear-seat legroom, underseat storage, and a center console designed to hold a laptop computer. Better yet, the new F-150's switchgear is designed for a person wearing work gloves.
Choose the 2015 Ford F-150 XLT and the truck adds Sync AppLink technology. The Lariat trim level is equipped with a MyFord Touch infotainment system and an 8-inch productivity screen that the truck's owner can customize. The new F-150 King Ranch gets special leather, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, and a premium audio system with HD Radio. At the top of the lineup, the 2015 Ford F-150 Platinum has wood trim and leather-wrapped multi-contour front seats.
Optional FeaturesIn addition to the upgrades mentioned above, the 2015 Ford F-150 can be optioned with a new BoxLink cargo management system that includes loading ramps and locking cleats. The F-150 is also available with a next-generation tailgate step system, a Smart Trailer Tow Module, 400-watt and 110-volt power outlets in the cab, and a trailer brake controller. Depending on the trim level, buyers can select a Sport Appearance package, Chrome Appearance package, and an FX4 package with skid plates, off-road shocks, and an electronic locking rear axle.
Numerous safety-related features and other technologies are also available for the new F-150, as outlined below.
Under the HoodWhen the 2015 Ford F-150 goes on sale, it will offer a choice between four engines, and Ford isn't divulging horsepower or torque ratings for any of them. That information will be available closer to launch.
Similar to the outgoing F-150, a 3.5-liter V-6 or a 5.0-liter V-8 engine is standard, depending on the model and equipment. Each is E85-compatible and paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and a choice between rear-wheel and 4-wheel drive (4WD).
For 2015, Ford offers two EcoBoost engine options, each equipped with active grille shutters. One of them is the familiar 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-6, available in the current version of the F-150. The other is a new 2.7-liter twin-turbo V-6 equipped with automatic start/stop technology that is designed to cease operation whenever the truck is placed in 4WD or is trailering. This new EcoBoost engine was used in a disguised 2015 F-150 to compete in the 2013 running of the Baja 1000, completing the 883-mile race without incident.
Additional mechanical details of the redesigned 2015 F-150 include electric steering, 4-wheel vented-disc brakes, double-wishbone front suspension, and a Hotchkiss live rear suspension with leaf springs and outboard shock absorbers. The F-150 is also equipped with hill-start assist and Curve Control, the latter feature automatically braking an inside wheel to help the truck negotiate a corner taken too rapidly.
SafetyFord will continue to offer its MyKey programmable safety features for the 2015 F-150, and most versions of the new truck will be available with reversing sensors, a reversing camera, inflatable rear seat belts, and a blind-spot information system with cross-traffic alert.
Additional safety-related options include an adaptive cruise control system with a Collision Mitigation System. If the front radar unit determines that a crash might occur, this latter technology pre-engages the brakes to slow the truck rapidly when the driver steps on the brake pedal. A lane-keeping system will also be offered for the new F-150, alerting the driver when the truck is drifting out of its lane and taking small corrective actions to keep the truck in its lane.
