IntroductionAt the 2014 New York Auto Show, the new 2015 BMW X4 will roll onto a stage for the first time, the latest in a lineup of what the automaker refers to as a Sports Activity Coupe. Based on the BMW X3, and equipped with a 5-door body style with a fastback roofline, the new BMW X4 will be priced from $45,625 when it goes on sale in the spring of 2014. BMW builds the X4 in its Spartanburg, South Carolina, assembly plant.
Exterior FeaturesSlightly longer and slightly lower to the ground than a BMW X3, the new 2015 BMW X4 is the first model from the automaker to split the signature contoured bodyline that traditionally runs down a BMW's flanks into two separate but related elements, each stretching rearward from the X4's wheel arches.
Other classic BMW design elements are present and accounted for: kidney-style grille, round headlights, and the so-called Hofmeister kink in the tapered shape of the rear quarter windows. The new BMW X4 offers LED fog lights, a variety of aluminum wheel sizes and styles, and standard Park Distance Control parking sensors.
Interior FeaturesBMW says it is aiming for "a synthesis of sportiness and exclusivity" with the new X4's interior. Rendered in high-gloss black, electroplated silver, and wood interior trim, the X4's cabin features more standard equipment than the BMW X3 upon which it is based, including a sports leather steering wheel with paddle shifters and a power tailgate.
Because the X4's roofline reaches its maximum height over the front seats, and because the X4 is shorter in terms of height, occupants sit lower in this vehicle than they do in the X3. Seating is a 4+1 arrangement, the 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat equipped with full bolsters for both outboard occupants but with space and a safety restraint for the middle position when it is necessary to transport a fifth passenger.
Behind the rear seat, the BMW X4 supplies 17.7 cu. ft. of cargo space. Fold the rear seat down and maximum space measures 49.4 cu. ft. A power tailgate is standard and can be upgraded with an optional Smart Opener feature that responds when the person carrying the key waves his or her foot under the rear bumper.
Optional FeaturesBuyers can upgrade from the standard BMW X4 with a choice between two different trim packages. The xLine package gives the X4 a more rugged appearance through the use of special exterior and interior trim pieces, unique paint colors and wheel designs, and different upholstery choices.
For a more performance-oriented version of the new X4, add the M Sport Line package to the vehicle. It includes aerodynamic styling with Shadowline trim, unique interior trim with an Anthracite headliner color, M steering wheel, M doorsill finishers, and more. This package isn't just about appearances, though, as it also comes with sport-bolstered seats, sport-tuned suspension, and larger wheels sized 19 or 20 in. in diameter.
Under the HoodThe 2015 BMW X4 xDrive28i is equipped with a turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 240 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. An 8-speed sport automatic transmission with shift paddles is standard, and an automatic start/stop feature shuts the engine off when the X4 is idling in order to conserve fuel. BMW claims the X4 xDrive28i will accelerate to 60 mph in 6 seconds flat.
For an extra $3,300, buyers can extract greater performance from the 2015 BMW X4 xDrive35i. This model has a turbocharged, 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine generating 300 horsepower between 5,800 rpm and 6,400 rpm, and 300 lb.-ft. of torque from 1,200 rpm to 5,000 rpm. This engine is also paired with an 8-speed sport automatic transmission with shift paddles and automatic start/stop technology. The X4 xDrive35i scoots to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds, according to BMW's stopwatch.
Every 2015 BMW X4 is equipped with variable sport steering, a Performance Control torque-vectoring system, and Driving Dynamics Control. This latter technology includes an Eco Pro driving mode designed to improve fuel economy, and activates a coasting function for the transmission that helps to maximize MPGs.
Eco Pro Route is available with the X4's optional navigation system, designed to program a route that will use the least amount of fuel. In conjunction with navigation system data, a Proactive Driving Assistant feature issues fuel-saving recommendations based on road and traffic conditions ahead.
SafetyEvery 2015 BMW X4 is equipped with 10 free years of BMW Assist eCall service. With this service, the X4 automatically contacts the BMW Call Center following a collision with an air bag deployment, conveying the SUV's exact location and key information about the event, including an assessment of likely occupant injury.
Additional safety technologies offered for the BMW X4 include an Active Driving Assistant, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go, pedestrian and collision warning with City Braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and a reversing camera with surround-view display.
TechnologyBMW's iDrive system is standard for the X4, and the optional navigation system installs an iDrive controller with a handwriting-recognition touchpad that allows the driver to input data using his or her fingertips. Advanced Real Time Traffic Information is also included with the navigation system. BMW also offers ConnectedDrive Services with smartphone integration technology, Concierge Service, and BMW Apps for iPhone users that primarily support Internet radio streaming.
A standard Control Display renders the X4's degree of body roll and pitch in 3-D graphics, and includes a compass with the navigation system. A head-up display is optional for the BMW X4, as is a park-assist feature that steers the SUV into a parallel parking space while the driver operates the transmission and foot pedals.
