IntroductionThe current version of the Toyota Tundra debuted for the 2007 model year and has seen continual refinement during its seven years on the market. For the 2014 Tundra, Toyota makes significant changes to the vehicle, which debuted at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show.
According to Bill Fay, group vice president and general manager, Toyota Division, "Tundra's new exterior design and all-new interior were inspired by customer feedback requesting a more chiseled exterior and refined interior with improved driver ergonomics, and easy-to-use technology, giving customers more of what they want in addition to what they need."
The new 2014 Toyota Tundra continues to employ the same frame and powertrains as the previous model. As before, the 2014 Tundra is designed in California, engineered in Michigan, and built in Texas.
Exterior FeaturesThe 2014 Toyota Tundra is offered in regular cab, extended cab (Double Cab), and crew cab (CrewMax) body styles with a choice between SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, and 1794 Edition trim levels. The SR model is the base version of the 2014 Tundra, while Toyota expects most Tundras to have the mid-level SR5 trim. Limited, Platinum and 1794 Edition models are luxury-themed, the latter named after the Texas ranch founded in 1794, on which the Tundra's Texas factory is built.
For 2014, the Tundra receives new styling from the front doors forward, as well as a new cargo box. The fenders are more defined and the wheel wells squared off compared to the previous Tundra. The new tailgate features an integrated spoiler designed to improve aerodynamics and fuel efficiency, and has TUNDRA stamped into it. The 2014 Tundra SR rides on 18-inch styled steel wheels.
Interior FeaturesToyota says the 2014 Tundra's new interior is designed to provide greater differentiation between trim levels through "thematic" design that "caters to a specific buyer with a specific budget."
Highlights for all Tundra models include 3-D metallic rings for the gauges, redesigned center console with more storage space, and a new information display screen. Radio and climate controls are located closer to the driver for greater ease of use, and Toyota notes that it has retained the large control knobs of the previous model, which owners can operate while we
New front seats with greater seat track travel are designed to improve comfort, while the 2014 Tundra CrewMax model's rear seat cushion now folds for greater in-cab cargo carrying capability. Both the Tundra Double Cab and Tundra CrewMax models are offered with a choice between a front bench seat and bucket seats.
Optional FeaturesToyota expects the 2014 Tundra SR5 model to prove the most popular with truck buyers. Compared to the standard Tundra SR, the SR5 is equipped with premium interior materials, metallic trim accents, and bolder seat fabrics.
The 2014 Tundra Limited model is a luxury-themed truck equipped with leather seats, soft-touch door panel and console surfaces, simulated wood interior trim, 8-way power driver seat, and automatic climate control. Exterior upgrades for the Tundra Limited include 20-inch aluminum wheels, chrome exterior trim, and a deck rail system.
Platinum models offer even more in terms of standard equipment and exclusivity. The 2014 Tundra Platinum gains perforated, double-stitched, diamond-plate premium leather with matching door and dashboard inserts, chrome interior accents, 10-way power driver seat with memory, and a 4-way power front passenger seat. The Platinum model is also equipped with a Display Audio premium touch-screen audio system with Entune technology and navigation, heated and ventilated front seats, power sunroof (CrewMax), unique 20-inch aluminum wheels, and LED running lights. Toyota also provides rear park-assist sensors for the Platinum model, as well as new blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert technologies.
The new-for-2014 Toyota Tundra 1794 Edition is equipped like the Platinum model, but gets its own wheel design and is equipped with Saddle Brown embossed leather with ultra-suede accents. Matching trim is applied to the Tundra 1794 Edition's door panels, dashboard, steering wheel, and shift knob.
Under the HoodA 4.0-liter V-6 engine making 270 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 278 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,400 rpm is standard for the Tundra regular cab and Tundra Double Cab models. The V-6 engine is paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission equipped with uphill/downhill shift logic, and is offered only with 2-wheel drive (2WD).
Tundra CrewMax models have a standard 4.6-liter V-8 engine generating 310 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 327 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,400 rpm. A 6-speed automatic transmission delivers power to the rear wheels or all four wheels through an optional 4-wheel-drive (4WD) system. This V-8 engine is optional for regular cab and Double Cab models, and is required for buyers seeking 4WD.
A 5.7-liter V-8 engine is optional for all three cab styles, producing 381 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 401 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,400 rpm. A 6-speed automatic transmission is standard, and this engine is offered with 2WD or 4WD. Toyota also provides an E85-compatible flex-fuel version of the 5.7-liter V-8.
SafetyStandard safety equipment for the 2014 Toyota Tundra includes a reversing camera, traction control system, stability control system, and 4-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist. Toyota also installs a Smart Stop brake override system in every Tundra model, which is designed to prevent acceleration if the brake pedal is pressed, and the 2014 Tundra will also be equipped with 8 standard air bags, including knee air bags for the driver and front passenger.
New for 2014, the Tundra Limited, Platinum and 1794 Edition offer a blind-spot monitoring system and a rear cross-traffic alert system.
TechnologyThe 2014 Toyota Tundra Platinum and 1794 Edition are equipped with standard Entune technology, which pairs a smartphone with the vehicle, allowing the driver to operate mobile applications right from the in-dash color touch screen.
