IntroductionThe 2014 Mini Paceman John Cooper Works is a new performance-tuned version of the Mini Cooper Paceman. The new Paceman is a 3-door, 4-passenger crossover SUV built on the same platform as the Mini Countryman.
Exterior FeaturesUnique 18-inch lightweight aluminum wheels, lowered ride height, model-specific aerodynamic body kit, and chrome sport exhaust outlets are key external identifiers for the new 2014 Mini John Cooper Works Paceman. Owners can select Chili Red paint for the roof and mirror caps, a color unavailable for other Paceman models.
Interior FeaturesThe John Cooper Works Paceman is equipped with a sport steering wheel, and both it and the gearshift display red contrast stitching unique to this model. Floor mats are trimmed in red, and this version of the Paceman is equipped with darkened gauge faces and an Anthracite roof liner. Like the standard Paceman, this version of the car features 4-passenger seating.
Optional FeaturesMini offers a long list of factory options and dealer-installed accessories for the new John Cooper Works Paceman--so many that it is rare to see two that are exactly alike. Highlights for this model include a variety of paint colors and stripes, interior colors and trim, and wheel designs. Extra-cost items are grouped into Cold Weather, Technology, and Premium option packages, or can be added individually from the options menu. Leather seats, premium sound system, Mini Connected smartphone integration, navigation system, power sunroof, automatic climate control, and Comfort Access passive entry are among the numerous upgrades available for the John Cooper Works Paceman.
Under the HoodA turbocharged, 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine resides under the 2014 John Cooper Works Paceman's hood. It is rated to generate 218 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 207 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,900 rpm and 5,000 rpm. An Overboost function increases torque output for short periods of time, to 221 lb.-ft. between 2,100 rpm and 4,500 rpm.
A 6-speed manual gearbox is standard, with a 6-speed automatic transmission optional. The automatic is equipped with paddle shifters mounted to the steering wheel, or the driver can shift manually using the gear selector.
The transmissions deliver power to all four wheels through Mini's ALL4 all-wheel-drive system. Under normal driving conditions, ALL4 distributes up to 50% of the engine's power to the rear wheels. Under extreme conditions, says Mini, ALL4 can deliver up to 100% of the engine's power to the rear wheels.
A Sport button serves to enliven the Paceman John Cooper Works by improving throttle response, sharpening the steering, and generating a more satisfying exhaust note. With the automatic transmission, the Sport button also quickens transmission shifts, according to Mini.
Mini describes the John Cooper Works Paceman's acceleration as "gratifyingly vivacious." By Mini's stopwatch, the JCW Paceman accelerates to 60 mph in 6.8 seconds and achieves a top speed of 140 mph with the manual gearbox (139 mph with the automatic).
In addition to providing upgrades designed to improve performance, the new John Cooper Works Paceman is equipped with a brake energy regeneration system and an automatic stop/start system that shuts the engine off while the car is idling in traffic or at intersections.
SafetyThe new Paceman John Cooper Works is equipped with standard traction control, stability control, 4-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes with Cornering Brake Control, and 7 air bags. Safety-related options include rear park-assist sensors, adaptive headlights, and rain-sensing wipers.
TechnologyMini Connected technology pairs an iPhone to the John Cooper Works Paceman, providing access to Twitter, Internet radio, RSS feeds, and more. This option is available with or without a navigation system.
