IntroductionThough it looks much like the original Soul on the outside, thanks to its floating roof design and wraparound appearance for the windshield and side window glass, the 2014 Kia Soul is completely redesigned. Bigger inside and out, and offered with an improved interior, upgraded amenities, and advanced technology, the new 2014 Soul is offered in Base, Plus, and Exclaim trim levels.
Exterior FeaturesKia says its Track'ster concept car inspired the new 2014 Soul's design, and that the Soul is constructed on a stiffer platform than before, in addition to being longer and wider than the previous model.
Key styling traits from the original Soul carry over to the new model, including the floating roof design that appears to peak right at the top of the windshield, the blacked-out roof pillars that provide a wraparound appearance for its trapezoidal greenhouse, the vertical taillights, and the front fender side marker lights. Aluminum wheels are optional for the base model, and standard for the Soul Plus and Soul Exclaim.
Interior FeaturesCircular design themes derived from the Track'ster concept dominate the 2014 Soul's redesigned interior. Kia says the Soul's new seat designs offer increased thigh and lateral support--that step-in height and seat hip points are lower to make it easier to get into and out of the vehicle, and that cargo space is improved over the previous model. According to Kia, the Soul's interior is also quieter for 2014.
Standard equipment includes power windows and door locks, heated power exterior mirrors, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, Bluetooth connectivity, and a stereo equipped with satellite radio, a USB port, auxiliary audio input jacks, and 6 speakers.
Optional FeaturesThe 2014 Kia Soul Plus adds cruise control, remote keyless entry, center console storage box, UVO eServices smartphone pairing and telematics service, and a reversing camera. This trim level is also equipped with 17-inch aluminum wheels, automatic headlights, turn signal indicators embedded into the side mirror housings, and a rear-seat center armrest.
The 2014 Soul Exclaim is the most expensive version, and is equipped with standard 18-inch aluminum wheels, fog lights, LED running lights, LED taillights, and upgraded exterior trim. The Exclaim also includes piano black interior trim, cooled glove box, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror, as well as a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, Supervision gauge cluster, 10-way power driver seat, automatic climate control, and a push-button ignition system.
Options for the Soul Plus and Soul Exclaim trims include a panoramic glass sunroof, premium audio system, navigation system, and ambient cabin lighting. Additionally, Kia offers leather seats, heated front and rear seats, ventilated driver seat, and a heated steering wheel for the 2014 Soul.
Under the HoodWhen it comes to the 2014 Soul, buyers may choose between two engines, both tuned to deliver responsive acceleration at low speed, Kia says, and both driving the vehicle's front wheels.
The standard direct-injection, 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine generates 130 horsepower at 6,300 rpm and 118 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,850 rpm, and is bolted to a standard 6-speed manual transmission. A 6-speed automatic transmission is available as an upgrade.
A more powerful 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is optional. This direct-injected power plant provides 164 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 151 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm. This engine is paired exclusively with the 6-speed automatic transmission.
Kia says the 2014 Soul also benefits from a 28.7% increase in torsional rigidity, new electric steering with improved on-center feel and response, and a new suspension that reduces ride harshness and improves ride quality. FlexSteer technology gives the Soul's driver the option of choosing Comfort, Normal, or Sport steering calibration.
