Introduction

Essentially a modern interpretation of the highly acclaimed CRX model, the Honda CR-Z blends sporty 2-door styling with a hybrid powertrain. Changes for 2013 include slight interior and exterior updates, increased power and fuel economy, and additional standard features including Bluetooth connectivity.

Exterior Features

All 2013 Honda CR-Zs are fitted with 16-inch alloy wheels, LED brake lights, a rear windshield wiper, and power-adjustable turn signal mirrors with an expanded-view feature on the driver's side. In addition to these items, EX variants boast automatic HID headlights, fog lights and heated mirrors.

Interior Features

A keyless entry system grants access to the 2013 Honda CR-Z's interior, which features automatic climate control, a rearview camera, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel with integrated audio controls, two bucket seats with manual height adjustment for the driver, and 25.1 cubic feet of cargo space. Bluetooth connectivity and streaming audio are also included, as is a 160-watt sound system with a USB port. EX models add aluminum pedals, leather trim, and a 360-watt audio upgrade.

Optional Features

Satellite radio service is a stand-alone option on the base 2013 Honda CR-Z. Buyers of the CR-Z EX can get the feature as part of an available navigation package that also includes voice activation, real-time traffic information, Internet radio capability, 6.5-inch touch screen, and text-to-voice technology.

Under the Hood

The 2013 Honda CR-Z's hybrid powertrain consists of a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine joined to an electric motor and a 15-kw Lithium-ion battery. Total output measures 130 horsepower and 140 lb.-ft. of torque, all directed to the front wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox with hill-start assist or a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with paddle shifters. Drivers can select from three available drive modes--normal, sport and economy--that adjust throttle and steering response. For 2013, Honda has added an S+ button, which draws more immediate power from the hybrid system's electric motor.

Fuel Economy

EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Honda CR-Z are:

  • CR-Z with 6-speed manual transmission: 31/38/34 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • CR-Z with CVT: 36/39/37 mpg

Safety

Honda has equipped the 2013 CR-Z with 6 air bags, front active head restraints, traction control, 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, and brake assist.

In government crash tests, the 2013 Honda CR-Z received an overall rating of 4 (out of 5) stars, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the CR-Z received a "Good" rating--the Institute's highest--for frontal-offset crash protection; the CR-Z also received a "Top Safety Pick" designation from the Institute.
