IntroductionThe Charger SRT8 is a high-performance version of Dodge's full-size 4-door sedan. It is powered by a larger, more powerful version of Dodge's Hemi V-8 than the regular Charger. "Hemi" refers to the semi-hemispherical shape of the engine's combustion chambers.
For 2013, the Charger SRT8 adds an Adaptive Damping Suspension to the top-line SRT8 Standard model. It has three modes: Auto, Sport and Track, each with progressively firmer suspension settings. The 2013 Charger SRT8 also gets a launch control system as standard equipment.
The Dodge Charger SRT8 competes against German rivals like the Audi RS6, BMW M5, and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, as well as the Ford Taurus SHO and Hyundai Genesis R-Spec.
Exterior FeaturesThe Dodge Charger SRT8 features a more aggressive design than the base Charger. To the base car it adds fog lights, a rear spoiler, and P245/45R20 tires. It also has a gloss black grille and grille surround, functional hood scoop, and satin black or charcoal gray hood and decklid stripes. The base SRT8 Super Bee model also has a helmeted bee mascot in the grille and round Super Bee graphics on the rear quarter panels.
Interior FeaturesThe Dodge Charger SRT8 seats 5 occupants. The trunk has 16.5 cubic feet of cargo space, and a standard 60/40 split-folding rear seat expands upon that. Standard interior features in the base SRT8 Super Bee include cloth upholstery, heated front seats, 6-way power-adjustable driver's seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, interior air filter, leather-wrapped tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel with audio controls, cruise control, power windows, heated power mirrors, power locks, keyless access and starting, auto-dimming rearview mirror, AM/FM/CD stereo, satellite radio, auxiliary input jack, USB port, outside temperature display, Bluetooth connectivity, universal garage door opener, compass, and remote engine starting.
Optional FeaturesTo the SRT8 Super Bee, the SRT8 Standard adds an 8.4-inch touch screen, navigation system with real-time traffic information, rearview camera, heated power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, leather upholstery, heated/ventilated front seats, power-adjustable pedals, memory system (for the driver's seat, mirrors, and pedals), heated/cooled front cupholders, heated rear seats, heated power mirrors with tilt-down back-up aid and driver's side auto dimming, xenon headlights, and the 3-mode Adaptive Damping Suspension.
Options include an Adaptive Cruise group with forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and a heated steering wheel. A new 392 Appearance package adds black vapor chrome aluminum wheels, satin black side stripes, a 392 engine cover, 392 black with gray Hemi badge, a numbered dashboard plaque, and Pitch Black paint on the center of the hood, exterior mirrors, and rear spoiler; this package is limited to 392 units. Also offered are 20-inch summer performance tires, a sunroof, and a Harman Kardon sound system.
Under the HoodThe 2013 Dodge Charger SRT8 features just one powertrain--a 6.4-liter V-8 engine mated with a 5-speed automatic transmission. The engine produces 470 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque, and it features Dodge's Fuel Saver Technology that shuts down 4 cylinders under light load conditions to save fuel. The transmission has Dodge's AutoStick manual shift capability.
Fuel EconomyEPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Dodge Charger SRT8 are 14/23/17 mpg (city/highway/combined).
SafetyThe 2013 Dodge Charger SRT8 comes standard with the usual list of safety features, including stability and traction control, anti-lock brakes, and multiple air bags. It also has brake assist, electronic brake-force distribution, and active front head restraints.
The Charger SRT8 hasn't been crash tested in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's New Car Assessment Program, but the Charger upon which it is based has. That car received the best rating of 5 stars in the frontal and side crash tests, 4 stars in the rollover test, and a 5-star overall rating. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) testing, the Charger received the best rating of "Good" in the moderate overlap front, side impact, roof strength, and rear crash protection tests, qualifying it as a "Top Safety Pick." It does not qualify as a "Top Safety Pick Plus" because it has not been subjected to the new small overlap front crash test, in which a score of "Good" is also required for that honor.
