Brandon Ramirez – Sr. Group Manager of Product Planning – Hyundai Motor America

New crash tests came out from the IIHS Autosafety Institute- what are companies like Hyundai doing to meet higher crash standards?

At Hyundai we’re always looking at ways to increase occupant safety. 2015 Genesis is a prime example of that mission.

Over 50% of the 2015 Genesis utilizes Advanced High Strength Steel. With this enhancement, Genesis was the first rear-wheel drive luxury sedan to earn a Good rating in the small overlap crash test.

Genesis also added a Hyundai first Automatic Emergency Braking that utilizes “sensor fusion” technology to help avoid a potential collision or reduce its impact.

With AEB, Genesis was the first and only rear-wheel drive vehicle in its class to receive the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) highest honor as a 2014 TOP SAFETY PICK+.

And how is Hyundai using new technology to help keep drivers safer behind the wheel?

We have several technologies available designed for helping keep drivers safe.

In our research, Blind Spot Detection is the #1 requested safety feature.

15MY Sonata, Azera, Santa Fe, Genesis & Equus now not only have available Blind Spot Detection, they also have Lane Change Assist to alert you of fast approaching vehicles in your blind spot & Rear Cross-Traffic Alert.

In 2015 Sonata, we’re also proud to offer forward collision warning and lane assist and departure warnings for added safety while on the road.

And finally, our Blue Link telematics system includes Automatic Collision Notification and other features for those times when help is needed.

Heads up displays are new and seem expensive- Do you forsee regular drivers getting that feature soon?

Currently, we have HUD available on 2015 Genesis and Equus. Both models have blind spot detection projected on the windshield, which is very convenient. We continue to study affordable technologies that meet the needs of consumers.

Backup cams & other features are helping- what other sensor systems do you see helping innovate for future safety?

Rearview camera is very popular, and Hyundai has equipped the volume models with rearview camera.

But radar sensors & cameras can deliver safety and convenient features.

For 2015 Genesis, the front radar can provide Smart Cruise Control with Stop/Start capability & the front camera can provide lane departure warning.

The Genesis has sensor fusion that combines the radar & camera to provide advanced safety features like Automatic Emergency Braking.

The rear sensors provide BSD, RCTA and LCA.

At Hyundai we continue to find innovative ways to offer consumer safety and convenience features.

What are manufacturers like Hyundai doing to keep eyes on the road, hands on the wheel while keeping connected?

Bluetooth streaming is commonplace now and available on all our models. Steering wheel audio controls also help enhance that experience.

Voice recognition is another way we help drivers interact with their cars.  In fact, we do offer Apple’s Siri “Eyes Free” voice recognition in many of our models

We know our customers want to use many of their favorite apps while driving so we want to make sure they can do so in a safe manner.

We’re constantly working with our technology partners to bring favorite apps and features safety into the driving experience.

For example, Pandora Internet Radio is a very popular app, and we have the app integrated into many of our vehicles and allows the consumer to listen to their favorite music and select thumbs up and down on the touch screen, but most importantly keeps their eyes on the road.

What kind of new features in your infotainment system can help with driver safety in the future?

We hear in our research that consumers want better smartphone integration

These consumers are already familiar with their smartphones, and want similar experience in their car

At Hyundai we’re really proud to be one of the first OEMs to offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto later in the model year for Sonata.
