The 1998 S80 by Volvo featured a brand new design and offered an inline six-cylinder engine with integrated GSM phone. Only minor changes to trims were noted for model year 1999, with dual-stage airbags being made standard. In 2000, an emergency trunk release handle was added as well as Emergency Brake Assistance (EBA), improved traction control, several new colors, and updates to various trim levels. 2001 would see no changes. But in 2002, the S80 offered a new front grille, an updated rear fascia, new door panels and a new gauge cluster. The optional Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) debuted in 2003, with minor tweaks being made to a few trim levels.
Some trim level shuffling was in store in 2004, with an all-new design being released in 2005 that offered a powerful (optional) V8 engine. Following the brand new design, only minor trim and cosmetic tweaks took place from 2006-2007. In 2008, a turbocharged six-cylinder engine was offered, making 281 horsepower. Active bi-xenon headlamps and Bluetooth integration became standard features in 2009. A major overhaul of options was the theme for 2010, alongside a newly designed interior cabin. 2012-2013 yielded only changes to options and trims. But in 2014, the front grille was updated and the S80 got new tires, headlamps, an instrument display, steering wheel, and updates were made to all trim levels and options.
