What is Genesis Face Connect, and How Does It Work?

Until now, smart keys were the most convenient way to gain entry to a vehicle. However, a new technology called “Face Connect” from the Genesis brand has come along to make this simple, everyday action even more effortless.

Genesis Face Connect

Like something out of a sci-fi movie, Face Connect is human-recognition technology that allows a vehicle’s doors to be unlocked and locked by scanning the driver’s face. To take things a step further on the biometrics front, this technology pairs with a Fingerprint Authentication System that allows owners to start their vehicle and drive off, whether their smart key is on their person or not. Face Connect will make its debut on the upcoming Genesis GV60 electric SUV.

The Genesis Face Connect system allows the driver to walk up to their vehicle, open the door, and get in as though they never locked the car. It requires no smart key to be in its vicinity.

The system uses a Near Infra-Red (NIR) camera positioned on the B-pillar to capture the driver’s face as they approach the vehicle. This camera works in all lighting conditions, day or night, so getting into the car, even in darkness, is not an issue. The only way for the system to not allow entry into the vehicle is if the camera becomes obstructed from “seeing” the driver’s face.

The NIR camera provides information to the system’s face-recognition software. Once the driver is recognized, the door immediately unlocks, even before a hand touches the vehicle.

Face Connect can register a maximum of two faces as approved drivers of the vehicle. Each of the two drivers can set up an individual profile that customizes vehicle settings, such as preset positions of the driver’s seat, side mirrors, and steering wheel. The system also makes personalized adjustments to the head-up display and infotainment settings based on stored preferences. Of course, other people aside from the approved drivers can drive the vehicle, but they will need a smart key and will not enjoy Face Connect features.

Overall, Face Connect technology allows vehicle owners freedom from their car keys. They can leave their keys in the car and lock the door using the system. Securing the vehicle enables drivers to readily participate in outdoor and recreational activities otherwise encumbered by carrying car keys.

Face Connect works in conjunction with a Fingerprint Authentication System that allows the driver to start the car by placing their finger on a reader found on the center console. Once the system verifies the driver’s identification, it allows them to start the car and drive away. Genesis has begun to replace its PIN code system with fingerprint authentication, which enables in-vehicle payments and activates Valet Mode for enhanced security, in addition to having vehicle start functionality.

OTA Updates - Find the best Genesis deals!

Alongside the introduction of Face Connect and fingerprint authentication technology, Genesis has further upgraded the in-car experience with a revised version of its over-the-air (OTA) software updates. In addition to sending updates to infotainment and digital systems, the new tech can now update mechanical systems such as suspension, brakes, and steering. In the future, OTA updates may allow Face Connect to expand its roster of approved drivers for a vehicle or add further customization to individual driver profiles.

The new Face Connect system from Genesis liberates drivers from having to carry car keys. Add to that new fingerprint authentication vehicle-start technology and expanded OTA capabilities for a new level of safety and convenience for Genesis owners. The Face Connect system will debut on the all-new GV60 electric SUV and will likely find its way into other models across the Genesis line.
