5 Fun Facts You Might Not Know About the 2021 Toyota Camry

While General Motors and Ford have all but abandoned the family-sedan segment, Toyota continues to woo shoppers with 4-door favorites such as the 2021 Camry.

Shoppers considering the purchase of a new Camry have their choice of several trim levels, including the basic LE, sporty SE and SE Nightshade variants, premium XLE and XSE models, and the performance-oriented Camry TRD.

A 4-cylinder engine coupled with front-wheel drive (FWD) is the standard configuration, though buyers can upgrade to a V6 or all-wheel drive (AWD). Toyota continues to offer the FWD Camry Hybrid, as well.

Now celebrating its 38th birthday, the Camry holds few surprises. Never ones to pass up a challenge, we dug into the data and came up with five lesser-known facts about this popular sedan.

Fun Fact 1: The Toyota Camry has more standard horsepower than an Audi A4 - Find the best Toyota deals!

If you look at the Toyota Camry LE and see a typical family sedan -- one you might pick up from the airport rental counter -- you’d be right. However, you may be surprised to learn that the humble 4-door car parked before you offers more standard horsepower than an Audi A4.

That luxury sedan uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder base engine producing 201 horsepower. By comparison, the Camry LE comes standard with a non-turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder boasting 203 hp, or 202 hp with optional AWD.

Unfortunately, one or two extra horsepower won’t make a difference in performance, especially when factoring in the A4’s abundance of torque. But, if ever asked why you purchased a Camry, you can honestly reply, “It’s more powerful than an Audi.”

Fun Fact 2: The Camry TRD is a legitimate sport sedan - Find the best Toyota deals!

Many automakers, including Toyota, dress vehicles with stripes or flashy wheels to give the impression of added performance yet make no changes to the engine or chassis. In other words, the cars are all show and no go.

That is not the case with the Camry TRD. Under the hood is a 301-hp V6 engine mated to an 8-speed automatic with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. TRD engineers upgraded the chassis with larger-diameter front disc brakes, dual-piston calipers, track-tuned shocks and springs, and 19-inch TRD alloy wheels available with grippy summer-rated tires

Thanks to these enhancements, the TRD variant is unlike any other Camry. It’s a genuine sport sedan that confidently tackles curvy roads.

Fun Fact 3: Camry has earned top safety awards for ten consecutive model years - Find the best Toyota deals!

Toyota continues to develop and improve the safety of the Camry, an effort that has not gone unnoticed. In crash tests performed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), properly equipped Camrys have earned that agency’s top 5-star overall rating since the 2012 model year. Likewise, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has recognized the Toyota Camry with its highest award designation, Top Safety Pick+, since 2015.

For 2021, Toyota equips all Camrys with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+. It includes a multitude of advanced safety features, such as forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. In addition, higher trim levels come with a standard blind-spot warning and optional rear automatic braking.

Fun Fact 4: You can use Amazon Alexa to start the 2021 Toyota Camry - Find the best Toyota deals!

With Toyota’s Remote Connect service, offered as a 1-year trial on 2021 Camry XLE and XSE models, you can start the car, check vehicle status, or control the door locks from anywhere using a smartphone app.

This technology has been around for years, but pairing it with the Amazon Alexa virtual assistant is a relatively new development. The quick-and-easy process includes downloading the Alexa app, selecting Toyota from the Skill dropdown menu, and entering a PIN and login information. Once that’s done, you can bypass the Remote Connect app and provide your Alexa-enabled smart device with a voice command to start the car.

Fun Fact 5: The Camry Hybrid LE is as efficient as a Toyota Prius LE - Find the best Toyota deals!

While the Camry and Prius share a certain amount of vehicular DNA, they present some distinct differences. Most obvious is styling, where the Camry exists as a sleek sedan and the Prius as a visually polarizing hatchback. This creates a dilemma for shoppers trying to decide between appearance and fuel efficiency.

Fortunately, there is a solution. The 2021 Camry Hybrid LE offers the best of both worlds with an EPA-rated 52 mpg in mixed driving. To achieve that number, the LE sticks with 16-inch tires instead of the larger rubber used on other trim levels, and includes fewer standard features.

In the end, the Camry Hybrid LE is just as efficient as a Prius LE. And it’s more efficient than direct competitors such as the Honda Accord Hybrid.
