2022 GMC Hummer SUV Preview
General Motors is introducing yet another new Hummer, this time the 2022 GMC Hummer EV SUV. Based on the same Ultium Drive platform and component set as the 2022 Hummer EV pickup truck, the Hummer EV SUV will debut on April 3, 2021, during the NCAA Final Four. Reservations for the new electric Hummer SUV will open immediately after that.
The irony of creating a battery-electric version of the vehicle that became the poster child of conspicuous consumption is not lost on anyone who has been around the auto industry for more than a decade. But just because the new GMC Hummer EV SUV is electric doesn't mean it can't land a punch, especially in terms of performance.
Details of the full-size electric SUV are still sketchy, but in top trim, it could offer 1,000 horsepower while peak torque could reach a staggering 11,500 lb.-ft. Three separate motors within two Ultium drive units would supply this immense amount of power. Lower horsepower versions of the GMC Hummer SUV are also likely.
The Hummer EV SUV might also offer 4-Wheel Steer featuring CrabWalk, a feature that allows the rear wheels and front wheels to steer at the same angle at low speeds, enabling the vehicle to move diagonally. It could prove useful not only for extreme rock-crawling through boulder fields but also for parallel parking in tight city parking places. The electric Hummer SUV's unique e4WD drive system should provide maneuverability unlike anything GM has ever offered.
At least some versions of the Hummer EV SUV are likely to have an adaptive air suspension. GMC's brief outline of features for the Hummer EV pickup truck touts the benefits of the suspension's Extract Mode. In this mode, the suspension height rises approximately six inches when that would help clear boulders, ford water, or create a spectacle in a parking lot.
The 2022 GMC Hummer EV SUV will offer fast-charging capability and should supply a range of 400 miles or so on a single charge. It could be available in both 5- and 8-passenger versions, with the 8-passenger model featuring a third row of seating. Its exterior and interior styling will recall the massive, squared-off gasoline-powered Hummers of more than a decade ago.
GMC has not announced prices, but highly equipped models will likely top $100,000. A base price in the high 5-figure range is possible, and less-expensive GMC Hummer EV SUVs models may follow in the future.
