Mercury Grand Marquis Models and Grand Marquis History

The Mercury Grand Marquis emerged in 1975 as a posher version of the existing Marquis. By the ends of the 1970s, the Grand Marquis' proved so popular it would even outsell the full-sized Mercury base model. In 1983, the Grand Marquis branding was exclusively applied to the largest Mercury vehicle. Fuel injection was added to the V-8 engined vehicle in 1986 while the Grand Marquis coupe production ended after the 1987 model year. Marking a major shift from the square-shaped sedan, the Mercury Grand Marquis adopted a cleaner, more aerodynamic look for 1992 that also included a new 4.6-liter V-8 engine. Through parts of the 1990s, the Mercury Grand Marquis' sales closely mirrored its similar Ford counterpart, the Crown Victoria. The design of the Grand Marquis was updated in 1998, 2003 and for the final time in 2006. After more than 36 years part of brand's heritage, the Grand Marquis was the last vehicle produced under the retired Mercury name in 2011.
