Conceived as a luxury crossover vehicle larger than the M-Class, the Mercedes-Benz GL first appeared in 2007. The 2007 GL-Class crossover utilized a stretched version of the M-Class platform consisting of a 6.4-inch longer wheelbase. This additional length afforded the Mercedes GL seven-passenger seating capacity. Featuring a 335-horsepower 4.7-liter V-8 engine equipped GL450 and a GL320 CDI powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel, the 2007 consisted of two premium equipped, all-wheel drive crossover models. A 382-horsepower Mercedes-Benz GL550 propelled by a 5.5-liter V-8 engine was introduced in 2008 and the diesel model of the GL was upgraded to a 3.0-liter BlueTEC diesel powerplant for 2009. Styling for the Mercedes-Benz GL was updated in 2010 defined with new bumpers, chrome tailpipes as well as LED fog lights and taillights. For 2012, the Mercedes-Benz GL crossover received AMG treatment led by a 557-horsepower V-8 powerplant. Special sport seating, high-performance brakes and 21-inch wheels were also added to the GL63 AMG model. An updated version of the GL-Class appears for the 2017 and is rebranded as the GLS-Class.
