In 2005, the sporty IS 300 was released, unveiled with a slew of luxurious amenities, a spacious and inviting cabin and a powerful 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine that could make 215 horsepower. In 2002, Lexus added a five-speed manual transmission to better compete with other automakers, in addition to upgrading the suspension, the GPS system, and many of the options and available trims to make them even more luxurious. The carmaker also expanded the safety features to now include side curtain airbags, auto-dimming mirrors, a stability control system and a BrakeAssist system. Lexus also introduced a wagon version of this car during this model year, too. No major changes were made to the 2003 or 2004 model years. In 2005, the limited-slip differential was discontinued (with the manual transmission version), and minor tweaks were made to various trims and optional add-ons.
