In 1989, the Scoupe became Korean automaker Hyundai's first coupe sold in the United States. Adding some fun driving flavor to a vehicle line-up that initially lacked excitement, the Excel-based Hyundai Scoupe was replaced in the mid-1990s by the Tiburon. After more than a decade-long period installing Hyundai as a suitable sport coupe builder, the Tiburon is retired for the rear-wheel drive Genesis Coupe. Sharing the name with a sedan, the Hyundai Genesis Coupe is uniquely styled and positioned to a performance-seeking crowd. Hyundai had also offered a coupe version of the Elantra briefly in the United States that disappeared after the 2014 model year. In the past, Hyundai has drawn input from Lotus as well as Porsche in obtaining well-mannered sport coupe handling.
