The sedan has been a hallmark for the Honda Civic line-up in the United States since the compact nameplate's initial arrival in 1973. The first Civic Sedan appeared with the introduction of the second generation model in 1980. Operating with Honda's then-popular CVCC engine technology, the 1980 Honda Civic Sedan quickly established itself as a popular body style for the economy car line. In addition to two other major redesigns in the 1980s, the Honda Civic began production within North America. Fuel injection became standard on the Honda Civic Sedan by 1988 while VTEC engine technology was rolled-out in the 1990s. Sleeker, aerodynamic styling became the norm for the Civic Sedan through the 1990s and 2000s while innovative, new powertrains also debuted. A gasoline/electric hybrid model was added in 2005 allowing the four-door to achieve a peak level of fuel efficiency. A sportier side of the Honda Civic Sedan was unveiled in 2007 when the Si trim was expanded. For 2016, the Honda Civic has been the recipient of a massive re-engineering for the model's tenth generation. The longest wheelbase offered on the Civic Sedan for 2016 meant increased interior space. The 2016 Honda Civic Sedan becomes the first to be available with a turbocharged engine.
