Honda Accord Hybrid Models and Accord Hybrid History

In 2005, Honda created their third hybrid production car based on their popular Accord Sedan. Propelled by a gasoline/electric powertrain classified as Hondas Integrated Motor Assist system, the 2005 Accord Hybrid operates with a 240-horsepower 3.0-liter gasoline engine paired with a 15-horsepower electric motor.

Fed from a nickel-metal hydride battery pack charged through regenerative braking, the electrical power unit is located between the gasoline engine and the 2005 Accord Hybrids five-speed automatic transmission. The gasoline I-VTEC six-cylinder powerplant included a technology called Variable Cylinder Management (VCM). Under specific conditions, VCM would allow the engine of the Honda Accord Hybrid to function on half of its total cylinders in order to conserve fuel.

Combined fuel economy for the 2005 Accord Hybrid was EPA-rated at 28 miles per gallon. Fuel economy is a four mile per gallon improvement over the traditional four-cylinder powered Accord with an automatic transmission. The 2005 Honda Accord Hybrid sedan arrived heavily equipped with standard features. Four-wheel disc brakes, 16-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, dual-zone climate controls and a six-speaker audio system with satellite radio is found on all 2005 Accord Hybrids.

A voice-activated navigation system was one of very few options available on the sedan. The Accord Hybrid received a minor design change in 2006 coinciding with the conventional Accord Sedan. The 2006 model year version of the Honda Accord Hybrid added Vehicle Stability Assist as a standard feature. Availability of the first-generation Accord Hybrid ended after the 2007 model year. After a seven-year absence, a gasoline/electric hybrid version of the Honda Accord was reintroduced for 2014.

Operating with a smaller 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, the new Accord Hybrids 124-kilowatt electric motor is significantly stronger than the previous model. Average fuel economy for the 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid is measure around 47 miles per gallon.
