An extended wheelbase version of GMC’s newly introduced mid-sized sport utility vehicle, the Envoy XL was designed to seat up to seven passengers. Based on a 129-inch wheelbase (16 inches longer than the basic Envoy), the 2002 GMC Envoy XL stretched to 207.6 inches in overall length. With three rows of seating inside, third-row passenger headroom was maximized by slightly raising the roof height. When the seven-passenger seating is not being fully utilized, the Envoy XL’s interior presented up to 100.2 cubic feet of cargo volume. Dual-zone air conditioning, air filtration system, tilting steering column, cruise control and stereo system with CD player was equipped standard inside all 2002 Envoy XL models.

 

A rear passenger DVD-based entertainment system with roof-mounted display was optional. A 4.2-liter V-6 engine producing 270 horsepower and 275 pound powered Available with two-wheel drive as well as an Autotrac four-wheel drive system, the 2002 GMC Envoy-feet of torque. Providing an a higher-performing optional powerplant for the 2003 Envoy XL, GMC introduced a 290 horsepower 5.3-liter Vortec V-8 engine ideal for towing loads up to 7,200 pounds. For 2005, the Envoy XL line added a high-end Denali model. The 2005 GMC Envoy XL Denali included a unique chrome mesh grille, body-color running lights, Nuance leather and a Bose audio system.

 

With the 2005 Envoy XL, the V-8 powerplant added Displacement on Demand technology that intelligently shifted the engine to operate on four cylinders to conserve fuel. After 2006, GMC discontinued the seven-passenger Envoy XL consolidating their mid-sized sport utility vehicle line-up to only the shorter wheelbase Envoy model.
