About Focus
Introduced in Europe during 1998, the subcompact Ford Focus launched in North America as a replacement to the Escort for the 2000 model year. The striking design of the first-generation Ford Focus was provided to the United States as a 3-door hatchback, 4-door sedan and a wagon. Despite some uneven reliability during the first years, the shapely Focus eventually settled into the Ford line-up as a valuable economy car. Powered by one of two four-cylinder engine options, the early Ford Focus offered special Sony Limited Edition, Street Edition and Kona Edition models as an effort to promote the vehicle’s personality. In 2001, an STV version of the Ford Focus was made available with a 170-horsepower engine and a serious performance character. A five-door hatchback Focus was made available to North American buyers in 2002.
For 2002 and 2003, AdvanceTrac electronic stability control was optional on the Ford Focus. Featuring refreshed front-end styling for 2005, the Ford Focus replaced the SVT model with an ST version. The Ford Focus was once-again restyled in 2008 with only a two-door and four-door model available. The Ford SYNC system was first introduced as an option for the Focus. For the 2012 model year, the North American Ford Focus received a completely new platform and a refined compact car appearance.
A 160-horsepower, direct-injection 2.0-liter engine powered a four-door sedan and five-door hatchback version of the 2012 Ford Focus. The following year, a high-performance Ford Focus ST debuted, cranking out 252 horsepower from a turbocharged engine.
